20x8.50 wheels on 72 chrysler - 03/31/16 04:35 PM

Ok guys,

Want to go to a 20x8.50 wheel on my 72 town and country. Currently running an 18x7.5 LX wheel with spacers.

What backspacing or offset should I run? I think they need to be as neutral as possible, most wheels ive looked at are -6 or +10 offset,

Also, opinions on tire size? currently running a 225/60R18 way too narrow for me, was thinking I could squeeze 275/45R20 on the rear but probably not the front.

No problem. Put a 20x12 rim with zero offset and stretch a set of 225/60r20 tires. Put a cali lift too thumbs

ok then.. I got a set of 275/60r15's w/ stock rims on my 70 300 no problem. So somewhere along the stock offset line would work. PS I was just messin with yah with my previous comment. laugh

What style of wheel were you looking for ? I have got some zero offset 20 x 8.5's before (in just inexpensive 1 piece stuff versus 2 piece that is)

As for tire size, there is a pretty good assortment of 20" stuff out there I have come across...haven't really ever seen a '72 T & C up close in person to know what would fit though off hand. If the 225 60 18 is what you have up front now, perhaps go with a 235/45-20 ? (28.3" diameter) or if you wanted a bit wider up front, a 255/40 perhaps at 28"

Like you said, a 275 or 285 perhaps would probably go assuming you have the width room ?

Oz,

Considering torque thrust style wheels. A lot of newer designed wheels wont clear front rotor design properly.

Not looking for anything super expensive, I drive the car frequently.

Maybe something like these ? A Ridler 695...they come in chrome, gray and charcoal and they do a 20 x 8.5 with zero offset. work

Or the 645 model...they come in chrome too depending on what you wanted.. work

Just some ideas off hand at leas from stuff I've seen before. (Have used the 695's before)

My 71 Fury easily swallowed up 275/60-15's up front. My 72 Charger had 295/50's. You've got lots ov room there man. Better yet, anything over 17" diameter clears the A-arm better, so more room yet. I've bolted on a random set ov 18x10" Mustang rims on the front ov my 70 Challenger, w 295's no less. Looked weird (sucked in too far), but moved fine.

I've seen a 69-71-ish Chrysler 2dr at shows (years ago, when i still went to shows), and it had pretty big 18"s all around. Same size all 4 too, i just forget what size.

If you cant get at least 275 all around, your offset is wrong. Thats a big wheelwell.

Most companies should do 10's along with 8 1/2's depending on what wheels you go with, so that shouldn't be too big a fuss..sounds like nice big wheel wells on it!

I wasn't sure on them, price is really good, but your original recommendation was good enough for me.

In your experience, do standard lug nuts work, or do I need the narrow shank lug nuts?

Usually use the smaller head (3/4") style nuts..the 13/16 ones might be a little tight depending on the socket you use, but you can give them a try first off.
We actually source most of our lug nuts from that company too.. (to sell in Oz that is) I still have about 7 pallets of them down at the warehouse to ship out in the next batch of containers actually. laugh2

And we've used a bunch of various wheels from them and had good luck with them.
