B Body Bucket Seat Mystery Frame

B Body Bucket Seat Mystery Frame - 02/19/16 01:04 AM

I am in the process of reupholstering the buckets seats on my 1972 Satellite Sebring Plus project car. First of all, let me say I am not sure if the buckets are actually from a '72 model, they may be from a '71. Anyway, I purchased Tamraz's 72-74 Mopar B Body Front Bucket Seat Bun Foam to replace the rotted foam in my front seats. The old driver's side bucket was so torn up that I could see a wire type frame showing through along both sides of the bucket seat back. The new foam doesn't seem to have this wire support built into the foam and my upholstery guy says he can't use the old frame structure (or whatever you call it) with the new foam. It seems without this steel support, my bucket seat with just the new foam will be all floppy on the sides. Am I predicting the negative outcome correctly or is old metal frame built into the original seat foam not really needed? Thank you from someone worried about breaking my seat back (or my own back).

Pictures of your frames would really help, but if anyone reproduces 1972-74 foam it is news to me.

Here is a foto of the torn bucket seat with the rods showing in the side missing the foam (it is the second foto on my build page)

Here is the ebay listing for the bucket seat foam:

They could be late 1971 frames, remove the back & look for the spring basket. If it is not there, then they are 1972 or newer. You should find part number tags with date codes inside also.

With a small release button??
I wasn't aware that
The side covers and buttons
Were interchangeable between them.

Somewhere in mid 1971 production, they changed the buckets slightly to have the smaller release button and 1 peice seat back/ hinge cover. They carried that style over into 72 with the only difference being the tracks.. That seat should be correct for a mid/ late 71/ 72.

These seats have a one piece plastic seat back and hinge cover. But the old seat back foam has built in metal rods to support the sides and I am still wondering why the aftermarket does not have that, and what happens when I lean back on the seat without that extra support. Maybe someone who has used the aftermarket foam can answer that?

The seat is correct for 71/72 . I think your frame may be broken on the door side . The metal wires inside the orig foam have to be reused/replaced on the new foam ,same with most all replacement foam for seats. Most all shops should know this .
