Squeaky upper control arm bushings!!??? - 12/16/15 10:48 PM

I replaced all the control arm bushings in my 70 challenger while restoring it. Had it on the road about a year now and about 6 months ago, got tired of hearing the passenger side upper control arm squeak, so I replaced both bushings (again, used the offset one in the front position for increased positive caster). Solved the problem immediately, although when removed, you could not make the bushing squeak or slip in the arm, looked perfectly fine. Now the driver side is squeaking!!! What's up with that?

It's jealous. Yank that side and replace as well is what I'd recommend. Unless you did both sides this time already. Maybe it's the material they used in that run of bushings and the one side was weakest and squeaked but now with newer pieces the other prior bushing sides chiming in from stress??

Sounds like you are using rubber (??)... rubber shouldn't squeak. Poly maybe but not rubber. Something is off with the original bushings. Agree good idea to replace the other.

Did you tighten the upper control arm bolts with the suspension loaded or at full droop.if you tighten the nuts without the weight of the car on them you can prematurely wear out the bushings which can cause squeeking.

Mine squeek occasionally after a good rain. I spray them with Zep45 (any light spray lubricant should work) and they stay quiet for another 6 months.

Make sure the cam bolts are good and tight. My 72B had a squeak after rebuilding the front end. I went back and tightened the cam bolts down real tight and the squeak went away.

"tighten the upper control arm bolts with the suspension loaded".....yes, made sure suspension height was adjusted to where I wanted it BEFORE I tightened them.

"cam bolts are good and tight".....yes, did this when I performed the alignment.

"spray them with Zep45".....didn't use Zep45, but I did try two or three silicone based lubricants on the pass side, nothing helped except replacing them.

"Something is off with the original bushings. Agree good idea to replace the other"......I'm in agreement with this, "the material they used in that run of bushings" probably...though I haven't tried spraying the driver side. Most likely I will have to replace them.

Thanks for the replies,
Jess
