1972 Cuda Power to manual conversion question.

Hello All,

I don't post often but read a great deal and try and follow along as time allows. Today I had an issue and I am hoping someone can help. I was replacing the power steering box in my 1972 cuda with a manual box and was under the impression the pitman arms were the same. Well I was wrong. The power steering pitman is too large (1.200") vs. the manual box output shaft (1.100"). I assume I need a different pitman? Any idea where I can get one? The manual box was out of a late 60's Dart and the power boz was original to the car. When I look for the part there is not a separate listing for a manual vs. power.

I converted my '70 Cuda to manual 20 years ago, but I used a manual box from a parts car slant 6 '70 Barracuda, I just ordered a pitman arm from Summit, for a Barracuda, and was not asked if it was power or manual steering, plan to change it and the idler arm this weekend.
The company was Proforged Chassis, part # 103-10030.

Thank Johnny. I appreciate the response. I did check it out on summit and it said it would fit manual and power assist. If you have the ability to measure, it would be great to know the ID of the steering box side of the pitman arm.

I called Proforged this morning to ask, because I'd rather find out there is a difference before taking it apart, then finding out.
The tech said '70-'72 E-body used a smaller sector shaft, after '73 it was larger.
By the way, I had also ordered a pitman for the Valiant I'm building, and it was a different part number from the E-body, so the A-body pitman is different.

The box must have been changed unless you have a very late build 72 because 73 was the first year for the large output PS box.

Thanks for the reply. I have to assume it is a late model. I have owned the car for 20 years and to the best of my knowledge the unit is the factory unit. So what is the correct pitman arm? I order the one for a 73 cuda. MOOG PN K7075. I am wondering if this will work?

Order 73-74 if it is the larger. They are also less expensive than the smaller one. You also have to have the longer steering column shaft.

Just for the record...I ordered the K7075 which is for the 73-74 e-body's and it worked fine. Exactly the same as the 72 power steering model, but with the smaller hole to fit the manual output shaft. It should work fine with the 70-72 e-body with manual steering. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
