331 for a 354 hemi swap is it doable - 07/06/15 09:29 PM

Long story short. Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe with a 331 Hemi. The engine is basically toast. 5500 to rebuild. Came across a Hemi in a Doge D-700 truck. From what I can gather it is a 354 Hemi. They want a thousand for it. Is it possible to swap these motors out with out too much effort? I actually say no; however, the local experts say sure.

Well, first of all what is the year of the car?
Second of all Board Member TRWaters is an old Hemi expert.
There's also HOTHEMIHEADS who should have knowledge.
Finally, where I have been, a decent 354 core for $1000 is a no-brainer. And don't throw that 331 away.

Year is important; the early 331 had an extended bellhousiong flange that prevents interchange with other early Hemis.

The year of the car is 1954. The model as I stated is New Yorker deluxe convertible. The problem with the rebuild Is that it's does not come with a warranty. So the person who is doing the swap was looking for a quick cheap out. The d-700 hemi is a 1958. It's out of a truck obviously.

You're OK with the 54.

The back of the blocks are the same from 1954 to 1958, 331, 354 and 392 Hemis. That truck motor has a bunch of industrial parts that where designed to carry heavy loads at WOT for a long time, bigger valve stems, different cam and lifters, super low compression and probally soild lifters with adjustable rocker arm amd matching pushrods and so on scope Not a bad thing but not the same motor as the passenger car motors work That is a big car, not many of them around, I would be tempted to throw a 6:71 blower on it with dual AFB and go cruising, probally work with the hood closed and no holes in the hood devil shruggy That should be a PowerFlyte 2 speed tranny with push buttons, correct? If not and it is a stick shift type fluid drive on the column the stock clutches won't take much abuse so be careful on burn outs whistling smile

55 Chrysler 2 speed powerflite, only year gear shift in dash via a lever. Hemi was 331.

56 1st year for push button (first year for torque flight, but most were still powerflite). 1st year for 354 hemi.
