Low/No cost 727 mods - 06/25/15 05:01 PM

I'm about to do a fluid/filter change on my Coronet, and was thinking while I have my pan off if there's any mods I can do to improve shifting. I'm not interested in a shift kit at this time, cause I might pull the tranny next year for a torque converter swap and add one then. Anything I can do while I've got the pan off?

as you know you'd wanna adj the inside band while you are there. I'd say bumping the line psi with the screw/bracket on the side of the VB. Not sure how much/far

Yeah I'm going to adjust the bands while I'm there (72 in-lbs, back off 2 1/4 turns)

I never could get to 72 in lbs (might have been a torque wrench prob) so I ended up adj the bands per Kunkels advice to 1/4 and 5/16 (iirc)

Accumulator blocking rod. You could upgrade the servos relatively easily.

I would replace the shifter seal while I was in there, but that's just me.

Not sure who told me but it was on this forum. The 72 inch/pounds while being a standard measurement, isn't as critical as the books make it sound. The trick I remember reading was, tighten the band "snug but not tight". If it feels like you are flexing parts, you are. 72 inch/pounds really isn't that tight. Then back off the prescribed number of turns. That's the important part. DO NOT FORGET THIS!! damhik You find out real fast whistling

It came from the old 80's Direct Connection racing manual and they work, also includes a few changes in the valve body.

I give the bands 1/8th inch play on the front and about 1/4 play on the rear.

Blocking the acumulator makes 1-2 harder but not 2-3 so it feels weird with one hard shift and one soft one.

I do crank the line pressure screw up till the tip is flush with the moving piece, it don't move it but a few pounds and typically no more than getting it in spec since the spring loses tension after 40 years or so.
