Need advice on a convertor for my A12

Need advice on a convertor for my A12 - 06/05/15 06:12 PM

Hey guys my A12 is about ready for its trans. Dudek built the engine with a Mr. Six Pack cam and stock manifolds on it and I talked to Dave about a convertor and he said use a Turbo Action 17501 but they are ALL sold out and have been back ordered for months with none in sight.

That is what I would like to run but without one available I called Bob since he made the cam and he is a great guy to talk to and he said get a convertor as close to a stock 383 convertor as the cam likes a tight convertor. He said it does not have to be a big fancy convertor as loose is not good for this cam. Anyone know what the stall on a stock 383 convertor is? And who stocks a comparable convertor?? Thanks for any help

Well, my car isn't an A12 but it is a six pack car with the same camshaft. It was getting to the point where I figured the cam and converter (stock) were a bit of a mismatch as I couldn't get out of the garage without spinning the tires....since then I found my problem was the distributor and minor carb tuning and now the idle is down to 900 rpm it works OK...but I still wonder if I'd have been better off with a slightly higher stall converter to improve driveability...

Bob is a great guy and I've spoken to him a few times; knowledgeable, friendly and very helpful.

2 cents,
Dave

I have been eyeing a 2400 stall. What stall do you have? Any idea what stock stall is?

I'm no expert, it's been quite a few years and I don't have my books and invoices in front of me.....but IIRC, the stall speed for a given converter varies depending on the power of the engine it's bolted too so a "2500" stall converter might stall at 1800 or 2500 rpm depending. Mine is supposed to be a stock converter but as my engine makes more power, the stall speed is lower.

Stock converters were 12" which were supposed to be 1800 - 2100 or 10.5" which were rated at 2100 - 2300. I'm not sure you can compare the "looseness" of the stock ratings vs. the aftermarket.

As I write this, I'm wondering if I was supposed to use the "stock" 10.5 and maybe I ended up with the 12"....that would explain why my higher hp motor was having issues when the idle was up around 1300 - 1400rpm ...

I'm going to see if I can dig out some paperwork to identify it. ....whatever it is, it's too tight for Bob K's Six Pack cam IMO.

The converter he recommends is a factory 10 3/4" P/N 2801 764; many rebuilders use the last three digits of the factory number so a quality rebuilt 764 would serve your purposes. Cores are getting hard to find.

I had been eyeing this one on Jegs. I wish I really knew what it would stall at with my setup. The engine was dyno'd and it 462 ft lbs of torque and 416 horse so it is not wild by any means but I wonder what the stall on these convertors was factored with a 350 ft lbs motor??

The 17501 is a little loose for that cam. Buy the flex plate and bolts for the 17501 from Turbo Action. It's a 6 bolt flex plate with lugs for the Hemi size TC bolts. You may have more options if you look for a Hemi replacement converter.?
