71/72 B body Tach Question - 05/31/15 01:01 AM

My 72 RR 4 speed car did not come with a factory tach...I have a real cool Mopar tach but im not sure where I should mount it for both looks and function...Can some of you with 71/72 B bodied cars show me where you have one mounted to get some ideas..Any place that does not butcher the originality like through the dash pad !!! popcorn

Because all the existing gauges would have to be changed...

I simply mounted mine on the steering column w a oversized clamp available at any autoparts store.

Back in 1977 when I bought my first 72 Satellite I just loosened the map and seatbelt assembly that is screwed to dash and slide the flat part of the tach's bracket under the edge and then re-tightened the screws.

On this Satellite I did it the factory way.

i am sorry, I assumed your RR had the rally dash with a clock instead of a tach.
this is how my 72 RR was.
all I did was buy a repo tach from charger specialties and wired it in. only took a couple hours to do it.

Never saw a 72 RR without a ralley dash so don't get the response either.

there are 2 different rallye clusters
one came with either a clock or tach
one came without both a clock or tach

the one without has a totally different gauge layout
so it will not accept a tach or clock
it has no room for either of them.

Your right I forgot about that, it would have been easier if the OP would have just showed us his dash instead of the outside of the car from the beginning.

I didn't know there were 2 different rally dashes for 72 B bodies. I will have to try to remember that.
I thought the only differences were in the 73-4 bezels with the extra light areas above the switches.
I have mostly worked on E bodies.

Trust me Id love the factory installment...But its a whole new dash cluster which id rather keep original..Mainly due to the low mileage and originality of the vehicle..

Just to clarify.

There are 3 different Rally dash GUAGE layouts.

1. with clock (speedo in large left pod, clock in large right pod, and the 2 smaller pods have 2 guages each)
2. with Tach (same as Clock layout, but has a Tach in the large Right pod)
3. NO clock OR tach (speedo in Large left pod, 2 guages in large right pod, and 1 guage each in each of the small pods.)

Woodgrain on the 71-3 is the same. 73's did't get the extra light icons. The 74 woodgrain is the only odd ball, as those extra light icons were required by the government starting with the 74 model year.

It's even more complex then that.. lol
The cluster frame itself is totally different for a 71
To be able to accept the 71 only wiper
switches...
so there were more then 3 versions of that cluster
71 was its own animal for a lot of things..

I believe that...Ive owned early and late built 72RRs that had many differences as well..
My dash looks like the number 3 that Mike 440TRK described...

Then if you have the seatbelt/maplight assembly what I posted in the beginning of this post will be the least intrusive way to mount a Tach.

Under the dash on an angle. Used existing holes under dash. I have a picture but don't know how to attach
