magnum 160,000 miles 5.7 Hemi too many miles? - 03/28/15 03:12 AM

Kind of a dumb question. But is 160,000 miles alot for the 5.7. Hemi. I am contemplating buying a 2005 Magnum for 6,600 bucks. I think that is kind of high. Is that just what these cars bring even with high miles. It sure is hard to find a hemi magnum. especially unmolested and with lower miles.

Magnums seems to hold their value, 5.7's can go a lot of miles

I have 150k on my 03 Ram and it still runs great and no leaks, no smoke, no noises and good oil pressure.

I ran my last 5.7 Durango to 165k. Performance and oil consumption were as new. My current one has about that and I plan to go to 200k at least. Both needed a water pump around 140k. The prior needed a fan clutch. The latest needed an exhaust manifold (warped) around 100k. That's it. The 5.7 seems to age very well.

A Magnum, driven reasonably and maintained, should do better as there is less load. There will be more maintenance at higher miles but I think no basic issues with the engine.

I have an 06 Magnum R/T AWD, with 110k miles on it now - never any issues with the 5.7. Although if you have a bit of surge at idle, and sometimes it wont start up right away, replace the cam sensor - up by the thermostat housing - way easy to do !! Won't be throwing any codes off, but once you replace it, rock steady idle and always easy starting. My car still have 50psi oil pressure when you get over 1500 rpm. 20psi at idle. . . everything works great. This was my company car and I have been only driver . . . if the car is in good shape, go for it . . .

mine is at about 140k miles, in an 04 durango. its on its third alternator, and has an exhaust leak on the rear drivers side cylinder due to a header bolt working loose, it was not possible to put the special clip on the bolt on that one and its worked loose. otherwise, its just recently its needed the throttle body cleaned. still runs good and drives fine.

The 5.7 Hemi's can go lots of miles if maintained decently.

My 2004 Ram 2500 with a 5.7 Hemi has 280,000 miles on it now and still runs great and only uses a quart of oil about every 4,000 miles.

My examples are not HEMI engines but I think they are good examples of the modern tech doing what they should be doing. Delivering!

My '03 quad cab 4X4 Dakota V6 has 220,000 mile plus and uses less than half a quart of oil between the oil changes. Still gets 19/20 Hwy.
The wife's '99 Durango has more mileage. Does use a little more oil than mine does though.
No leaks on ether engine. They run like an old sewing machine. Solid as a rock. Modern engine with high miles really do not scare me. Prior maintainence or lack there off is the pit fall.

Ditto..the wifes 06 R/T has 180k on it...still strong and uses no oil.The front ends though ,I think we are on the 3rd complete rebuild...too much backroading.

160k miles for a new engine is nothing to sweat over. The rest of the car on the other hand may be ready for some repairs. Hear about front end problems with those cars. Haven't seen any running around with the same rust issues the same era rams have.

My 06 has rusted through on the end of the right rear quarter where it meets the bumper cover.Rest of car still clean.
