Who's running a 3.73 gear?

Who's running a 3.73 gear? - 03/14/15 02:59 AM

Thinking of this gear to replace a noisy 3.91 in a 742 case I have. Right now I'm running a 489 case with 3.55 it's fine on the expressway with my 28" drag radials but a bit soft off the line. In the future I will replace the 360 with a 426" sb so the torque will be way up and HP should be about 100 more. Who makes the 3.73, I am looking for a hi quality set, the 742 has new bearings and clutch pack, also will add hi strength axles at the same time.

I have a 3.73 in my Polara.I believe I got it from Mancini.I can't remember if it was a Strange/U.S. Gear or a house brand. It has been quiet and trouble free.

Got mine from Dr Diff; I think it was a yukon gear but don't quote me on that. He supplied me with the yoke, and solid pinion spacer and shims I needed too for the swap. Have not had any issues which includes a trip to the track and some 12.20 passes.

How is around town and highway driveability? A friend is putting 3:55 in his car once his 383 gets stroked and should have over 400hp. I wonder of 3:73 may work. 15" 60 series tires. 727 in a 69 satellite?

I have 3.73's with 33-inch tires on my Factory AMC V8 CJ5 Jeep and it seems just about the Best gear for driving around town, off-road and even on the Freeway. 4.10 was too much, and 3.55 was not enough.

It all depends on tire height and expected sustained rpm.How long you will be at the rpm as well.
I have 28" tires and it takes an hour to get to the nearest 1/4 mile.I liked the cruising with 3.55's better and will likely switch back after one attempt at the track with the lower gears to see if it betters the 12.54 best with 3.55's.
A tourqey motor will do better with taller gears.Higher rpm where the cam makes power later will benefit from the lower gear. There is always a trade off with driveability with lower gears unless you have an overdrive tranny.

This is a very "subjective" question but I will tell you that after driving 140 each way last summer with 3.54 gear, I began shopping for an overdrive! I had what is considered a "quiet" exhaust, B body with all kinds of sound deadener. Noise and vibration drove me bonkers!
But I am an old man...

Thanks guys, i don't usually go on long highway drives most are 30 minutes. maybe 3 or 4 drives an hour long a year. Probably 60/40 hwy/city. Not sure i will always have the 28" rear tire but guessing with that stroker staying with that size DR will be best.

I think the size looks good and fills the wheel well correctly. but some times i think its a tad to big

I have a 3.73 gear set for a Dana 60 and I also have a Dana 60-2 that is narrowed to fit my D100 and also fits an A-body (same width). If it were my car I would go Dana and skip right past the 8.75"

The Dana 60-2 is going in my truck with 4.10 gears, a PowerLock carrier, 35 spline stock axles
and 34" diameter 305/75R16 tires. Should be a nice upgrade

The wheel/tire in the picture is a 245/75R16 and only 30" in diameter, so the tire width will go from 9.5" to 12". This is of course to improve the towing capacity of the truck...that is what I tell my wife anyway
