A lot of tire shops have a socket that will go over and grip the nut to turn it off. I've seen them split after hitting them with a chisel or you could weld a nut on them.

Use a piece of black pipe and pound it onto the offending lug then twist it with a pipe wrench. Chop the end with the lug in it off, rinse, repeat.

Sears has a set of impact sockets for exactly this problem.

If Sears sells these tools for would-be thieves....why do we continue to put them on our vehicles?

The van i bought last year in CA had wheel locks no key. Since the wheels were alloy slots there were no spoles around the nuts to get in the way. I took a chisel and made a notch on the outsde edge of the nut when it was large enough I beat it counter clockwise and after a few hits they spun right off.

Don't miss or you will mess up alloy wheels!

Because knuckleheads like me cant keep track of the keys to the locks.

I have done it a ton of times...just get a socket a little too small to fit over the lug nut (a 12 point) and pound it on with a big (use an extension to make it easier to hit) then just hit it with the impact gun and you're set. Once it's off..I just set the socket in the vise and tap out the lug with a drift.

I always use Craftsman so if I ever happen to split a socket, it's only a quick trick to Sears for a new one

Take a punch and drive the center pin of the lock into the nut and then just use a ratchet and extension as a key. I've done it dozens of times on used cars. The stud doesn't go all the way into the nut so there is room for the pin to go in.

I've used an oil sender socket. Works like a charm.

If they are that easy to defeat, I'm gonna get rid of mine and just run regular lugs. They are a PITA anyway. And probably do nothing for my wheel balance.

Tighten the other 4 up more. Then get a flat blade square shank screw driver and jam it into the slot for the key. Find the pattern it fits best in. Then put a wrench on the shank and turn...usually does it for me.

Don't overthink it, locking lugnuts are a joke...Listen t OzHemi and pound a socket on 'em and spin 'em off. Use a Craftsman socket so when it splits you can exchange it for a new one...

Bought new tires for my truck, made a right out of the tire shop in time to see my Mag KEY go sliding off my hood into the black hole of center median foliage!!!!! Gone forever. Turned around, in less then 5 minute the shop had all 4 off and repace with new locks (at their expense)

go to a local tire shop and ask them to knock them off maybe buy a 12pk of beverages

Its an oddball socket shaped like an oil sending unit. You DONT need it for this. Find a socket that almost fits on the lugnut. HAMMER it on. Remove with impact if you have one, regular ratchet/breaker if you dont

will this still work if the locking lug nut is one of those round ones? (meaning it is not hex shaped but rather smooth. thanks again

Yes...pound a socket on as I mentioned...I have done it on all sorts and kinds of lock nuts.

This has been an issue since 5 minutes after the first set was sold.
As mentioned, the big tool guys have special tools for this, or you can use the various options mentioned.
The easiest for you is to go to a good tire shop and have them do it. The 50th set you do is easier than the first. Those guys have already done 50....

Slightly OT. Remember these? Snap On used to want $35 for the socket.

Lots of good suggestions. I got mine off with just a pair of vice grips.5 minutes and all four were off.
Makes you feel real secure. Locks only keep honest people from taking your stuff.

I have those screws on my license plate (here you get your license plate removed if you park somewhere a cop doesn't like, not necessarily illegal) They can never remove mine hahahaha....But I bought the socket from a woodworking supply for like $9 a couple years back.

Great idea! I bought the socket once, then misplaced. Fool me once, shame on you... After that, I found a commonplace remover.

Re: need to remove locking lug nuts, dont have a key - 01/17/09 05:31 PM

Yes the thieves know how to get what they want in seconds. first most of us carry the lock in the car some place and you can break into a sixties muscle car in seconds. If you don't carry them and you have a flat all tow truck drivers know how to drive a socket on them and spin them off. You can only stop very young kids and after that you just slow thieves down slightly. I too have welded bolts to the offending nut and even with the key they have rounded out so another method to remove them is needed.

Didn't think about tightening the other 4; that probably would have made it easier. Mine were REALLY on there; pounding a socket on didn't work. Used the Sears tools and worked fine.
