440 factory chrome valve covers - 01/31/15 11:26 PM
Is there a way to tell if a set of chrome valve covers are a factory part. My car (70 Cuda) had a set of chrome valve covers on it when I got it in 86 and I have held on to them ever since. I have never given them a serious check to see if they have a part # or anything but I know they are a good heavy gauge metal. Any help would be appreciated. What cars would they have come on?

These chrome covers on my sons 400 in his Dart are from a buddy of mine who gave them to me for some work I did on his 68 Charger. These were on his 68 440 Charger R/T when he bought it in 1998. I dont even know if any 68 440 Chargers came with chrome valve covers but these do look like a factory valve cover but not sure what they are really from. I do believe my friends 68 Cuda 383 had factory chrome valve covers on it. Ron

Also came on 71 and 72 Dodge Polaras 440 police crusiers. I delivered a 71 dodge Polara and next year a 72 polara special both had chrome top pans and chrome dip stick , I also took them off the car carrier .

Factory chrome covers are the same metal stampings as stock painted covers for the same year, the combinations of welded on looms can be different. They have baffles welded inside, they have the notches for the gaskets to mount to. Some have plug wire looms and wire harness looms welded on like a painted cover. 67 GTX has the welded on bracket for the heater hoses. The oil breather cap is a push on style on the standpipe made into the valve cover. The breathers and pcv valve and hardware are just the same as painted covers for the same year car. See the trends, they are just like the painted covers in so many ways.
The covers on the green car above are not factory, they are Direct Connection. They are a chrome plated version of mid 70's stock BB covers. The easy wat to tell is the raised center, 1/4 turn oil fill cap, and the breather goes into a rubber grommet.

68 and 69 Dart chrome valve cover are different, as I am sure the earlier ones are too. AFAIK no other cars came with them but you could sure buy them from the dealer.

These were offered in Hustle Stuff before Direct Connection.
Some of the later Direct Connection valve covers SB and BB were of the different higher design.
The early ones were also common in BB marine applications...
