Help Identify which 70/71 challenger fenders I have

Help Identify which 70/71 challenger fenders I have - 01/17/15 12:50 AM

I bought a pair of fenders that were reported as coming off from a 71 Challenger convertible. I am trying to find out if they are correct for my Feb 1970 car. From the MMC e-body judging manual it appears that they would be correct for from Feb 1970 to Nov 1970 by the fact that there isn't a notch at the radiator support for the 72-74 grill and factory formed lip in the wheel well. What do you guys think?

Is your car a HEMI or T/A?

If it is not - those should be the correct fenders. If it is, I don't think they are too far off that they couldn't be modified to appear correct.

It's a FM3 318 car with possible delusions of grandeur.

I bought my 71 Challenger convertible in June 1972 and it had fenders without the notch. It was built in early December 1970.

Dan,

Did the Hemi & TA cars use the same fenders, but with the wheel well brace removed for 15" tire clearance?

If we're NOT talking HEMI or T/A the discussion is simpler.
Curious what the MMC manual shows? Why only Feb. '70 - Nov. '70? What's different earlier?

AFAIK the sheet metal exterior & engine compartment jamb is the same for the entire '70 model year. Is it not?

I would say the fenders above are correct for a 70 with 14" wheels.

I'm looking at the challenger section of the icca e body book. The Feb 70 date references are related to the stopping of hand rolled wheel lips in 70. The "Nov 70" ref is for the cut outs for the grill.

Reading between the lines, early 71 challengers can have left over 70 production fenders without grill cut outs. 71's produced sometime in Nov switched over to the grill cut out fenders.

I don't think there is any difference on a non-HEMI '70 model year Challenger fender, including the E60-15 tired cars.

Oops! I made a mistake. I was thinking my Challenger vert was built in December 1970 but I just looked and it was built in 11-70 according to the door sticker. Either I've have/had too many cars or I'm getting too old to remember the specifics. I was thinking I may need to find notched fenders for the later grille or modify mine.

What's the SPD from the b'cast sheet or fender tag? The SPD could easily be from early Dec. '70 & the car built in the last days of Nov. '70 as the door sticker indicates.

Look at some original paint Nov./Dec. '70 ('71 Challengers), I doubt you will find any with "notches". "[bandito]notches? you don't need no stinkin' notches![/bandito]"

B19 (SPD) 11/19/70 Scheduled Production Date & built in November '70

I guess we know it wasn't >19 days early (October) or >11 days late (December).

That's what I interpreted it to mean as well. Sometimes the book is a little vague. I'm still not sure when the 70 performance hoods switched over from the ones without the crumple zones to the ones with the crumple zone....

I think that's an incorrect way to characterize the change.

1970 & '71 fenders are the same, mid-model year 1971 the "notches" for the "New for '72 grill" started to appear.

Defining the date for the introduction of the "notches" is the question - I doubt it was as early as November '70.
