Around 300 sold with the 198 & 3-speed total. The A93 Coupes were a mid year option, so they were not made the whole model year.

If it's a numbers matching car I'd restore it to original. If you'd rather have something with more kick I'd recommend selling it and getting a car that better suites your tastes, I know a couple guys who would REALLY like to have that car (who would restore it stock) if you need to move it.

You will get more attention with the car being a SIX than with another motor because everyone has done a swap to a bigger motor. I like seeing E Bodies with sixes in them it sure is a nice change to seeing every E Body with a Hemi in it now. How many 1970 Hemi Cudas were built in 1970? How many of these Barracudas were built with a six? It might not have that wow that things got a hemi when you raise the hood but but it would be a pleasant change to see a six in an E body at a car show.

I agree. If you want to impress the unwashed masses...put in a Hemi. If you want to impress your fellow enthusiasts, do something like this:

Rare, yes....desirable?, no, It needs a complete resto, then it's best off being cloned/rebodied to something more desirable IMHO

Leave the six in it, I bought a 69 Chevelle 300 Deluxe post car in 73
230 six in it, Everyone back then said to put a 396 in it,
I left it the way it was, restored it nut and bolt
Still have it, and when the hoods up, I get more compliments than the BBlocks
It's kind of a neat thing

Re: How Rare?? BH23BOB FC7 3-speed console - 11/27/14 07:19 PM
Ultimately it is your decision what to do with your car . . . I have always said, you gotta make the car for YOU !!! Personally, I would leave it how it was built. Probably get awesome gas mileage, and is totally NOT what someone else has !! At the end of the day, if someone wants it bad enough (i.e. dump in a 340, BB, or hemi and 4spd, etc) after you are done, then I am sure you can get MORE than your moneys worth out of the car. And being A93 with fixed rear windows - pretty rare !!!
I would think that there were far more slant 6 and 318 cars built, than the "muscle" versions . . . I am sure AlaskanTA would be able to give nubmers on that.
GREAT FIND !!! Good luck !!!
Cheers
Mark

I have never seen a BH or JH 198 car. It would be cool or restore to correct status.
Or put the 1 of none offset shaker option option on it!

Re: How Rare?? BH23BOB FC7 3-speed console - 11/27/14 08:10 PM
Now that is a super unusual and rare car to have. Like Scott said, he knows peoe looking to do a resto on one of those. Ask for a swap or enough to get a natural V8 and have at it.
My vote, is to keep it stock and blow some minds with it. I have seen /6 auto E bodies before. Never a manual. That is pretty awesome dude!!!

I did notice that it is said the stamp on motor should match the stamp on tranny---if you look at the two stamps, I have pictured, there is a deep #4, matches on both stampings something to remember when verifying a #'s matching car!!!

I would think the color combo paired with the drive train combo makes this car super rare. I vote stock.

Re: How Rare?? BH23BOB FC7 3-speed console - 11/28/14 02:03 AM
For me, what you have is far more interesting than any V-8 swapped in it, including a Hemi. But I'm interested in history, not clones.
If you don't want it as is, someone who will restore it to stock will want it.
IMHO if someone clones it into a V-8 they should hope to get the value of the parts they put in. Labor free. Certainly not a money making venture for a cloner. Plus if someone wants to clone it they would want to get rid of the "economy" features.
So if you are selling it, is your price realistic for the person who would buy it?

Re: How Rare?? BH23BOB FC7 3-speed console - 11/28/14 04:02 AM
I believe I would restore it as well.
Your car reminds me of a 1971 Challenger my father had back in the early 1980's that I learned to drive in.
It was also a 198 with a 3 speed standard in the floor and a coupe as well.
His was white with a Chartreuse longitude stripe which my father taped off and painted black and it had green interior with out the console.
I would like to have that one back but the guy my father sold it to was going to big block it and before he got started on it some young punks vandalized the car and it was parted out.

Some interesting reply's in this thread.
I have a 70 challenger that is a slant six stick, factory FJ5. When I bought it I had plans to use it as a "blank piece of canvas" I never did anything with it. Now I feel like I should leave it alone but in the grand scheme of things it is probably last on my list.

Got a buddy here that has a A93 71 Barracuda, 198 with 3spd on floor. Only options as I recall, are power brakes and steering. Fixed rear windows, Butterscotch with two tone tan interior, 75k mile car. He has turned down lots of $$$$ by those that wanted to make a Hemi 4spd clone car . . . I would think the /6 with 3spd would be rarer today, than a Hemi car . . .

Re: How Rare?? BH23BOB FC7 3-speed console - 11/28/14 11:22 PM
Total 198 cu.in. Barracudas were "rarer" than HEMI'Cudas when new!
& I'd bet 90% are dead 'n gone.
1970 U.S. spec.:BH23B0 w/3-spd ~297
BH23B0 w/auto ~164
BS23R0B w/4-spd ~284
BS23R0B w/auto ~368
Great color combo & the "elastomeric" bumper package does not hurt the eye appeal!

Re: How Rare?? BH23BOB FC7 3-speed console - 11/29/14 02:30 AM
If you keep the original block in it and want a little more grunt, a 225 crank and rods will bolt right in the 198 block, pistons are the same 198/225.
I found 3 sheets in my Cuda, 1 in the back seat bottom, 1 in each of the bucket seat backs.
I enjoy seeing restored slant six and 318 cars as much as the HiPo V8s, so yeah, keep the 198 in it.
There is/was an FM3 A93 Barracuda in north GA. The owner posted about it 8-9 years ago on another site, never heard about it since.

Re: How Rare?? BH23BOB FC7 3-speed console - 11/29/14 06:22 PM
My vote is to make something cool out of it. A 198 slant is a dog, you won't like it. Put a 440 in it and some hockey sticks and don't look back.
I have a JH23B0B Deputy Challenger, one of like 500 or something but it's still going to be a Vanishing point clone even though it's numbers matching and pretty rare.

Those two side-by-side at a car-show would get all the looks, all day long.
By the way, you can slip an A833 under there and keep the 3-speed shifter: no one will ever know the difference.
