Anybody convert a 65 cable shift car......? - 11/05/14 04:22 PM

.....to 66 and newer tranny?

My woman just bought herself a 65 Fury 1 with a 383 auto. The tranny is sloppy. I have several 66 and newer trannys to choose from. I found this product from A&A that looks good. Any input?

middle to end of the page is the only other choice I am aware of.
never done it, but thought about it.

also noticed that the newer van's 90's seem to have a "cable" type shift in their columns and thought about seeing how that might work too.

I used imperial's cables when I put a newer 727 in my '65 belvedere II. It's a good kit, not too miserable to install and adjust. But it took over 6 months for them to send it to me. The main reason I did the trans swap was to run a newer style valve body, IMO that was the only bonus.

The 65and earlier 727s had a different input shaft, therefore a different converter which is harder to get.

This is my first step towards a 518 swap in the future.

You would have to check it out but a 66 Fury column and linkage might bolt in and be the cheapest. It may not be concourse correct but doesn't sound like that is a concern.

I stayed with the cable shift in my 65 C body and some days wish I hadn't. It works good and everything but it just seemed like I spent a lot of money on it by the time I replaced the shift and park cables. Different converter, etc etc

For the $160 cable conversion (add $100 for the conversion trans mount) you're close to the cost of overhaul parts for the '65 trans.

I have a 727 cable shift transmission that I took out of my 65 Coronet when I converted to 4-speed. The transmission worked great when I removed it 3 years ago, and it's been stored in heated garage since then. I'm located in Missoula, MT. We used the imperial services kit on my dad's 65 coronet with a 66 trans (the 66 has the same spline pattern, so he used the same converter that was with the 65 trans).

We are using a manual valve body in the 66 trans.

It works OK, we have tried adjusting every which way and can't get it perfect. As it is now, the 2-3 shift requires pushing the shifter a bit further towards neurtral than should be. But it's not a race car, so it's livable..

I'd give the A&A one a try if I had to do it again.. maybe the geometry or something is better than the imperial services one. Or it could be the exact same. I didn't even think imperial services was in business anymore..

I called A&A and talked to a guy. He seemed knowledgeable and was good on the phone, so I ordered one.

I weighed my options and considering I have a fresh newer tranny and I plan a 518 swap before too long updating now makes the most sense.

Thanks for the input fellas.
