max wedge nascar intake - 10/20/14 12:50 AM

part#2465165 I saw this on craigslist this morning and bought it. It has been butchered up top a little. But I am going to fix it. I almost passed on it but I never saw one of these and I thought I should still buy it. according to some old magazine articles it is an improved verion of the single plenum max wedge nascar intake. It has dual ports to still give some ram tuning and more power throughout rpm range. I am going to see if someone can tig weld it and then I will just grind it down smooth as I can. It had epoxy covering the hole in the picture. I just finished cleaning it all out. It sucked. I paid $250. But even damaged it was just too cool to pass on. Someone ground out the carb area so bad they went through a plenum wall. Who are these people that do this. What are they thinking. I want opinions on if the carb will seal with a standard gasket? The guy I bought it from had a carb spacer mounted permanent. But I removed for now to see what damage there really was. I hope there is enough flange left for a carb too seal. I have a max wedge clone I am building. And thought if I ever want just a four barrel on it . This one I would like too use.

hole in plenum that needs filling. Or would it not really effect the air fuel mixture too much if I just left it??

I kinda think you would be ok using some J B Weld stick, filling up that hole.

I too have one of those intakes, and when i got it, i put it in the bead cleaner to make it look spiffy.

The aluminum was porus on one runner, and started putting a hole in the top of the runner with the blast of the bead agent.

Used JB Weld on it, and it worked great, to this day.

Yeah, I thought about jb weld. It worked good on the bottom of my boat. I just woor about it coming off going into the motor. The Jb weld stick is kind of like a putty till it hardens if I am not mistaken. Maybe if it gets sandwiched on both sides of the hole it could work and not fall off.

I wouldn't think that small of a hole would have much if any effect on the fuel distribution. The DP4B's used to have a hole in the divider plate. I know because I ran a Holley three barrel on one back in the day. The rectangular hole or slot was necessary to clear the secondary throttle plate. It was not something I added, they were made that way.

The one I found 20yrs ago was cut also. That one from 20 years ago looks like it was already like that from the factory. I have a little Hot Rod Plymouth book that shows a factory drawing or blueprint and that looks correct. Maybe some were cut and some were't.

Yes, no doubt the plenum was cut, modified, for someones application.
But they all started life as a 4 hole manifold, then after that, anybody could have done anything they wanted to, with the intake.
