The Pentastar-shaped head was not introduced until 1970 -- to fit the column-mounted lock cyl.

Correct,
69 uses the rectangle head, same at 68 and earlier, but Mopar changed vendors for 69 (Yale I believe) and the long milled slot is in a different location than previous and all the teeth are different heights so the lock pins do not interchange.

Got a 67 BCuda with a pentagon head, round trunk, been that way for years. Must have been something done way back in the day.

The Pentastar shaped head debuts with the 1969 EP (1969 series "primary") & ES (1969 series "secondary") codes.

Although the generic key blanks (Y-152 ignition & Y-149 trunk) are the same for '68 & earlier years - the set up in reference to the "groove" is what changed the pin heights for the EP/ES coded keys.

I have original keys with "A", "B", "I", & "Y" stamped on them, I do not know who the manufacturer or which ones were factory supplied with each year.

B = Briggs & Stratton, I = Ilco, Y = Yale

same for my dads 67 barracuda, originally an arizona car, he got it in the mid 80s, we always assumed they were original.

my 62 valiant (canadian model, not a plymouth) came to me with pentastar head with a B under the star and 770U in the top part for the doors, and a pentastar with a B for the ignition, and a round one with marks worn off for the trunk.

it also has a set of pentastar knock offs with curtis on the star. the door keys hve a different set of grooves than the ignition

the car was delivered in april of 1962, so i guess the keys arent original, if wikis sept 1962 adoption of the pentastar logo is right

My father's '65 Coronet, bought new, came with a pentastar-shaped ignition/door key and a round trunk key that was flat on one side (no grooves).

The grooves on the sides of the key are called 'keyways'. The letter on the key refers to which keyway it is.

Here is pic of the Ilco catalog. 1966 was a separate year for the trunk key. The newer key will work though as it has a wider groove.

Ign is 1764P & Trunk is 1766S

1959 -1964 were a side bar lock & there were grooves on only one side of the blank.

Go to a locksmith, don't screw around with the hardware store or the big box store.
