What 26” radiator in 1971 Duster with 6.1 Gen III Hemi - 10/04/14 05:45 PM

I’m now in the process of building a restified 1971 Duster that will be powered by a warmed over 6.1 Gen III Hemi. I would like to know what off the shelf 26” radiator would fit after the core support is opened up. Ideally I would like to stick with a copper radiator as the look I’m going for is how the factory would have dropped an A-Body on a 6.1 on the assembly line. The car will look like a stock Duster 340 (Rally instrument cluster, sharktooth grill) with the hood closed.

The car will have A/C, manual transmission, P/S manual 4-wheel disc brakes (Mopar 11.75” with Viper calipers) running 225/60 performance tires on 16” steelies. The chassis is being stiffened with the US CarTool chassis stiffening kit. Final mockup now in progress with a 5.7 block, Lakewood bell housing and 833 bolted in place with the TTI motor mounts on a 1971 biscuit K-member.

I’m looking forward to your input.

26 inch Radiator - 10/04/14 09:58 PM

Depending on your hose locations, I put a 4 core from a 1974 1-ton dually that is 26 inches into my 1971 Demon. With a little modification to the core support it bolted in using stock mounting bolts and locations. Stock fan shroud fits in as well.

Ur picture shows a flex-fan..
I would dump that @ the earliest possible time. A buddy used a flexfan and a blade broke off cut his upper hose and cut into the radiator. A flexfan may be acceptable for a low rpm street application but not in a high performance engine that revs past 5K rpm..

Just my $0.02...

One option would be a Mancini "Muscle Car" radiator. It is top tank aluminum and made (quickly) to your specs provided on a form. I run a 26" version on an E with 496 and AC and it cools great. I just had to re-order after a full truck tread on the road took the old one out.

Specs in on Monday, shipped today. They can put the water connections wherever you want them. My "old" one was in place for ~10 years with no cooling deterioration. A coat of radiator paint helps it blend in somewhat.
