American Grade 8 bolts - 01/03/09 06:13 AM

are these "JH" grade 8 bolts chinese? if so I wanted to replace them with some quality USA made pieces.
they are 1/2" bolts 3 inch under head length fine thread. I need four bolts.
Already called ARP and they don't have them in the 5 packs.
was wondering if anyone knew of a source as I dont mind paying for quality bolts
if not I'll just use them
thanks

What application?

Unless it's an internal engine fastener there is usually not a problem with cleaning up and re-using the factory Chrysler bolts. I'd trust an oem bolt long before a Home Depot bolt.

Chinese bolts would not have English letters on them. You're Ok as is.

If this link:

is to be believed, what you have was made in Taiwan. On the flip side, Grade 8 SHOULD be Grade 8 regardless of who sells it but you never know. There was at least one case I was aware of years ago when International Harvester (I told you it was years ago) had bought a batch of cheap bolting, used it in the front ends of trucks, and then started having failures. Real mess IIRC.

If you want something really hard
go to a CAT dealer.

home depot is cheap stuff. but, I've not had any problems with the stuff I've bought there. I just hate the gold zinc'd plating they put on them! its so hard to find black oxide bolts!

maybe fastenal has what you need? they have great selection, but too bad in my experience, they make you buy a bag of 50!

1/2-20 x 3 Grade 9 Yellow Zinc Hex Cap Screw

I think I found what I was looking for
these bolts are GRADE 9! wow! didn't know those existed
nice price too
thanks

Technically, there is no such thing as a "grade 9" rating, there is a brand label "grade 9' but not a sanctioned rating, even though its strenght may exceed grade 8.

Re: American Grade 8 bolts - 01/03/09 06:08 PM

you are right, I researched them a bit and they are L9 bolts. L9 bolts have a minimum tensile strength of 180,000 psi, which is significantly higher than the standard for Grade 8

The Air Force got bit several years ago by a supplier. Sent them "grade 8 bolts" which were nothing more than standard bolts that were plated.
I can't remember the exact story, but someone tested
them found them not to the standard. After an investigation, they were found to have been made in China and someone along the way sent false documentation along with them.

The JH is probably the manufacturer.

I found a CAT dealer nearby and got some bolts
gonna replace all my bolts with either CAT or ARP

the CAT deal was pretty cool
turns out they got a bunch of USA made tools and stuff

So you just go in to a Cat dealership and ask for them, how does that work? I have never been to one before.

Neat Idea!

Yup, just found the closest one on their website and asked for bolts. They were hella cheap too $1.59 per bolt. they even gave me a part and tools catalog

It would appear that JH fasteners are Chinese. Correct me if I am wrong because I have used a bunch of these from the local hardware store.

"Grade 8" is a spec so it's unlikely that it matters where they're made, the spec will be the same i.e. you can't stamp "grade 8" on a plastic bolt !!!

As for that cheap bolt story, they bought exactly that ... cheap bolts, not a specific grade that wasn't up to spec.

Grade 8 in your application is probably overkill and a waste of money. Before spending money on good bolts you should research the strengths of the various bolts and determine your needs. In this application a grade 2 bolt will probably do just fine! Don't like that, then step up to a grade 5. Grade 8 ???? Unnecessary.

The CHinese seem to be able to stamp whatever they want on whatever they feel like. I too would chuck those bolts in the garbage.

A prime example here is a cross-pinning bolt that holds the blade to the shaft in a bushog mower. It would seem logical to use a strong bolt, but reality is that you want a weaker bolt that will act as a fuse if the blade hits soemthing sturdy. Better to replace a bolt than a blade...
