HELP - 2009 SRT8 Challenger won't stay running - 08/12/14 01:23 AM

Our 2009 SRT8 Challenger with 13,000 will not stay running. It started by stalling out a couple times cruising around one day and has gotten progressively worse to the point now that it won't even make it a mile before stalling. Despite having only 13,000 miles the car is no longer under warranty and has essentially become an expensive piece of yard art at the moment. The car is absolutely immaculate and has never even been driven in the rain and this makes me sick.

The car does not throw any codes, I had the battery tested and cleaned all the terminals. The battery tested perfect and cleaning the terminals made no difference. I'm thinking it may be fuel related but there is no service port to check the pressure so I'm not sure where to start. Has anyone had a similar issue or have any ideas where to start?

I hate the idea of taking it to any of the local dealers as I have had horrible experiences in the past.

Thanks Guys!!

Most likely a cam or crank position sensor.

You would get a better answer here:

I think those sensors would trip a an obdII code.

I'd swap out the ASD relay (if it's still called that on the new stuff) for another like relay in the box.
Also check/clean/tighten the ground connections. They are often the culprits on intermittent issues.

is the gas good? run some from the fuel line, into a glass jar, and look at it.

Did you scan it? Remember, it's very possible for OBDII to see an issue and not turn on the light. Some circuits/sensors need 2 consecutive trips with a fault to flag the light....however a code can still be in the PCM,it's called a pending code. Have it scanned for ALL codes and look closely at data. Any competent service center should be able to help you out.

P.S. Make sure they check for relevant TSB's while they have it.

Does it just stall at an idle or when you let your foot off the gas ? In other words can you start it and keep it running if you keep your foot on the gas ? Ron

Clean the throttle plate and surrond with cleaner and a lint free rag carefully open it as it is a electric throttle bet that is problem or the Idle speed

Re: HELP - 2009 SRT8 Challenger won't stay running - 08/12/14 05:54 PM

I checked the codes and only a low voltage code came up. Which was from removing the battery to get tested.

Its not really intermittent anymore since it stalls after just a minute or so. Its stalls while cruising, sitting, idling or accelerating. Its really scary when it just stalls when cruising at 60 MPH and you ave to panic to find a place to safely pull off.

The ASD relay was the first thing we changed out. I took the cover off the ASD relay to watch if it was opening causing the car to stall but it stays closed until after the car dies then it opens. So it doesnt appear to be ASD related.

The car was running pretty low on fuel when the stalling issue originally began and we filled it up with fresh fuel.

The car still has the original 2008 version of software loaded so it likely is due to have the latest revision loaded.

Thanks for the advice guys! Please keep the ideas coming.

It kills me that a car that runs $45K new would have issues like this with only 13K miles on it.

My wife said someone mentioned to her that the original owner may have purchased an extended warranty that would automatically transfer but we have to call Chrysler to find out.

Wrong.

If the crank sensor stops sending the correct info the computer can assume the sensor is correct and that the engine is no longer running. The computer stops all engine functions and waits for you to restart. When the faulty crank sensor doesn't see the engine turning the computer doesn't initiate the run programming.

Bad sensors do not always throw a code.

One reason they make scanners.Never amazes me that people will spend tons of $$$$ guessing at a problem. But wont spend say 80 bucks for a diag.Saw it at thw shop a lot.The parst store says it this or that. They spend $$$ and same problem.Scanners read live data.Code readers dont.Rocky

I have seen some newer low mileage cars with plugged fuel filters?? Is yours in the tank? or in line somewhere??

I was thinking fuel filter too.

Could be dangerous, have you checked dealer or Chrysler on any recalls?

Suspect GM now wishes they had followed up on early complaints on faulty ignition switches.

Calling dealer or Chrysler point out possible dangers. They may volunteer assistance.

Just google TSBs and recalls. It lists pretty much all of them. That car has a module pump.Ive never seen one yet that the filter inside was plugged and I worked on all of them for over 30 years.Rocky

Could be a bad skim key or wcm/wirless module.Does the security lamp come on when the event happens? These rolling laptops we call a car now dang it!

Re: HELP - 2009 SRT8 Challenger won't stay running - 08/13/14 03:37 AM

The stalling occurs with both keys and nothing display on the evic.

I called to check on recalls but there weren't any based on the VIN.

We had it flat towed over to a local shop so hopefully they can find something when running diagnostics. I have had so many poor experiences with dealers I hope it doesn't have to go there to be fixed. I'll be sure to post what they find. I'm praying its just some simple sensor. The car runs like a bat outta hell when its not stalling.

I really don't think this could be related but the problem started shortly after we changed oil. Of course the weather was crappy up to that point so the SRT had never really been driven either.

Re: HELP - 2009 SRT8 Challenger won't stay running - 08/13/14 05:30 PM

Did the problem get worse after you filled the tank?

I have a 2006 SRT8 Magnum. If I top the tank off the car will buck and stall. The problem is with a valve on the top of the gas tank. It lets raw fuel into the evap system when the tank is full/overfull, then when the evap opens it dumps raw fuel and floods the car.

The first time this happened to me I filled up on a slow pump and by the time the pump kicked out my tank was past topped off. So far I've just been stopping at just over 3/4 full when I get gas, and haven't had anymore stalling problems. I got a letter form Chrysler, the problem is so common that they are extending the warranty on the tank and will replace it for free. I just haven't brought mine in yet.

I know this affects Magnums, Chargers, and 300s, but I'm not sure about Challengers or the specific year models.

It did get worse after the fill-up.

Re: HELP - 2009 SRT8 Challenger won't stay running - 08/14/14 03:23 AM

Apparently the diagnostics show the ASD circuit is shutting the car off. So now to find out what is triggering the ASD

Re: HELP - 2009 SRT8 Challenger won't stay running - 08/14/14 05:20 AM

A crank sensor telling the computer that the engine isn't turning can trigger the ASD.

Again, if the crank sensor maintains connection to the computer but fails to pick up the signal from the reluctor wheel then the car will assume the engine has quit running.
A fault code will only be stored if the crank sensor fails to report to the computer.

That's what trips up a lot of people. A bad sensor will not always trip a fault code. Sensors have two jobs.
1) Monitor the engine for it's designed purpose.
2) Report it's findings to the computer.
No matter what it says, if it talks the computer will think it's okay.

If an O2 sensor fails to detect unburned oxygen it will tell the computer to change the mix. The computer doesn't know it's gone bad and will assume the sensor is reading correctly. The computer will only point a finger at the O2 sensor if it quits talking.

Re: HELP - 2009 SRT8 Challenger won't stay running - 08/15/14 07:08 PM

Looks to be fixed.

Bad fuel pump relay.

The mechanic said he has seen a ton of 08-09 dodges with bad relays and thinks dodge must have gotten a bad batch from bosch back in the day. He does alot of fleet maintenance on cop cars so he is very familiar with the LX cars.

I'm so relived just a little disappointed we didn't find it on our own.

Thanks for all the help guys!!!
