And when I start it and adjust the timing it ideals fine till I put it in gear then it bogs down and timing is messed up again I'm getting gas flow but when I start to drivit bogs down till I get on it but still bogs down when I do normal driving help????

The carb and the timing are not related.....Sound like the new carb is not tuned for the 318...or it needs to be gone thru.

Time is set at 12 degrees and i dont know what the idle speed is when the timing is set. the carb is off a 87 ram charger i found in the scrap yard the ram charger had a 318 i rebuilt the carb twice now the jets are 70s. but when i put the truck in gear it bogs down and the timing is like at a 8 or a 6 it wont stay

Is the ESA hooked up and working properly?

I had problems with my '84 D100, lack of power and 12 mpg, so I replaced my ESA with a regular mechanical/vacuum advance dist, changed the 1bbl Holley for a 2bbl BBD and ditched all unnecessary wiring and vacuum lines. Besides fixing the drivability issues and increasing the mpg to 19, it simplified things when I have to work on it and cleaned up the under hood appearance.

Is the vacuum advance hooked up/to the correct port?

X2 you may be on manifold & there might not be a ported nipple on that particular carb. If there is find it switch it & retime it/readj idle. If not then set the timing at 12 or so for a start/idle speed good in drive

Stating the oblvious, but you did install a 4 barrel manifold, and it is not a source of a vacuum leak?

Yes I changed out the intake from two to four ummthere is four vacuum ports on the front three are capped off and three ports in back one is capped off all vacuum is hooked up right I just don't wanna switch everything back to the holly I have cause I'll have to switch out intakes again

If it has ESA, there is no vacuum advance.

This one don't have ESA it has vacuum advance the carb and intake are off a 87 ram charger the ram charger had ESA because there was no vacuum advance

I'd put it in Drive with the Ebrake on then set the timing at 15 with a reasonably slow idle speed & likely need to richen the idle mix screws. Hopefully no vac leak anywhere.

I changed out the carb and hopefully will get it checked out and tuned for a 318 tomorrow I put a difftrent holly two barrel on and it seems to do much better changed plugs wire cap and rotor as well and it idles good just when it goes in gear it runs rough I changed vacuum lines and made sure I had no leaks so tomorrow I'll mess with the timing some more and thank you all for your help

if it idles good but dont have enough power to continue to idle good when in gear which takes a bit more power I'd guess it (the idle circuit) needs to be richened up (assuming no vac leak) assuming the timing is adequate

sounds like that might be a feed-back carb, it will not work with out a pcm.

find a older q-jet that is be for emissions. I use 68-71 chebby q-jets off 327 engine. they are close on jetting.

if it has a vac dist in it... was the rest of the leanburn Ign system by changed over to run the elect vac dist?

I'll be pulling one off a 350 this weekend its on a 81 Chevy I'll get it and see if that will work I'll be tweaking on this holly and the timing this afternoon hoping that will work for now I heard some good things about q jets mostly for gas mph I'm not really trying for power right now
