Where to order a MP Electronic Ignition Kit? - 07/10/14 10:24 AM

Where do I order a MP Electronic Ignition Kit? Summit only has the small block on their website, need a 383. Ditto for Jegs. Mopar.com only has a download for a catalog.

I'd think Mancini would have it or eBay. I would suggest a good used dist and eBay has the new pentastar/pigtail & ballasts are easy to come by new or used. this will allow you to avoid the orange box and get another ECU of your choosing and then pick a good coil. reportedly the new Mallory based MP dists which is what you get in the kit which have the adv of the curve being externally adjustable but have an issue something wrong with the adv plate?? tho I have no first hand exp with them but many people use them with no problems and the older dists are harder to adj with the clip and the slot welding/filing required but just me I accept that & work with it. Ebay would likely have the complete kit also & might call your dealer

I bought a smallblock kit at Carlisle last year from Mancini and they were on clearance. I can't remember if they told me MP or Mancini was getting out of the distributor business. I'm pretty sure they told me Mallory wasn't or hadn't been supplying MP for some time.

Yep, doing the motor on the Wagon. Mancini's website says they are out of stock. Guess I'll try ebay, thanks.

Check out some of the other brands. I used to use the MP conversion kits when they were $90, but for $200+ you can get a better setup than the MP one when spending that kind of $$$. If you just want inexpensive Electronic ignition, get a rebuilt electronic dist, and a replacement electronic box.

I used the Proform kit for the 383 in my Satellite. I ordered it from Summit. It looks identical to the MP kit and everything installs the same.

MP newer kits ( mallory made ) are built with rotor around 90º off, so you can either relocate the oil pump shaft reindexed to match the stock number one on cap, or if you don't care, will get a new number one cilinder position on cap.

If you want a deeper job, can make a new slot for the correct rotor location on top shaft of dist at a machine shop

about advancing plates issues... not more than the stock one, since actually is the same stock piece

Nacho what was the problem with them as iirc you were the one who mentioned what it was way back

Re: Where to order a MP Electronic Ignition Kit? - 07/13/14 11:08 PM

too much play between the pick up plate and support plate. That makes the advance movement is not exact. Added to this the advancing plate center ( pivot point ) doesn't meet the center of reluctor, this draws a diff ratious between them imposible to correct, so pick up coil can even bite the reluctor.

hard to adjust all the play around with all the free pieces related.

( dunno if you understand what I posted, dunno how to explain it better in english )

You can try to adjust the gap to .008" but on advance position can get maybe up to .005" and when returning maybe get .010", then at next advance get .007... whatever can happen...

Its an original "design fail".

Now dunno if FACTORY pieces where so baddly made or built or not.

Nacho Your grammer makes perfect sense. Yeah now remember you were saying about the pivot pin slop and the off center radius messing up the gap with the vac adv in use

Re: Where to order a MP Electronic Ignition Kit? - 07/14/14 01:22 AM

Even with the diff ratious between pickup plate and reluctor imposible to solve and what allways will give you a diff gap between both positions, with a tight advancing plate assembly, maybe more spring tension on pivot retainer and who knows whatever more, the gap variation could be WAY less critical, being not more than maybe +/- .002" max. Something easy to live if you adjust .009 in rest giving you maybe .007 advanced. ( something I tried hard untill make it, or thinking I did it LOL, without know what really is happening once car is running LOL )

This includes the diaphram rod stud and hole on plate... EVERY RELATED PART.

I remember when you bent the magnet support and or base & got the gap change down to almost nothing but that was with a regular non Mallory dist. EDIT You mentioned not knowing what it is doing in operation, I have a hand held Craftsman vac pump with a gauge & it's the cats ass for working with dists & one of the few Craftsman tools I have faith in. I would not work on a dist without it

Re: Where to order a MP Electronic Ignition Kit? - 07/14/14 01:51 AM

actually I did it on both dist... stock and MP ( mallory ) units. both are EXACTLY the same dist... what only changes is the shaft just due the mechanical advance system, thats all! but housing, vac adv plate, pickup coil, reluctor and vacuum itself are ( fortunatelly, or not ) all the same pieces

You should order PERTRONIX far easier and more reliable. And this is coming from a guy with a crap load of spare parts for that ignition. By the way if it is not a factory black control box it will fail at the least opportune moment,

Re: Where to order a MP Electronic Ignition Kit? - 07/15/14 04:44 PM

Since the OP is interested on the MP kit, sometimes the best is simply google the PN and find another sources diff from the tipical ones

https://www.monicattichrysler.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=178

OTHERWISE, if not the MP kit, I would get the Rev-N-Nator box ( personal experience ) and by some members good experiences, Firecore distributor.

I know you said kit, but I bet you could source most of what you need from Rock Auto for a 400 big block motor from a 75 B body. The wiring diagram is in any of the MP manuals to convert from points to factory style ignition. A rebuilt factory style distributor and ECU wiring harness and you're on your way.

I ordered the new kit from Mancini. They say it is made by the same guys that made the MP Kit. We'll see how it works.

What is a good source for the control units since everyone seems to think the orange boxes are suspect.

Re: Where to order a MP Electronic Ignition Kit? - 07/18/14 03:43 PM

Mopar Performance decided to get out of the ignition business. Once shelves clear out they are gone. Probably why Jegs and Summit have their own kits now. Probably made by Proform if I had to guess.
One of the few boxes I never had here to test was a Proform.

My Proform kit came with the orange box.
Needless to say it never made it out of the shop...
