Went to adjust worm gear pre-load........

Went to adjust worm gear pre-load........ - 07/06/14 06:37 AM

went to check the pre-load on a '68 Dodge Dart manual and my lock runs into the pot coupling.
There seems to be a lot of thread on the nut compared to my '94 Dodge Ram.

I'm not sure of what you are trying to relay. Care to give it another try?

since you ain't getting much love on this deal I'll ask if the splined nub is too short/recessed to where the coupler is down too close to the box (adjuster) which I have never seen. Is the coupler down too far on the splined nub? It only goes down to where you can slide a lock bolt in sideways past the scallop to lock the coupler in position fore/aft. EDIT I see you do have the locking roll pin in there so...

If I punch out the roll pin and slide the pot coupling back will that give me enough room?

there's 2 sections of splines with a scallop in between them which to visualize the "scallop" that it'd be like if you took a rattail file & filed a groove on a round shaft. This is what the sideways roll pin goes past so as to lock the coupler in it's fore/aft position. yes I'd drive out the roll pin & slide the coupler back up the shaft toward the firewall so you can see if everything is copacetic there. In the pic it sure looks like there are protrusions from the adjuster face that are interfering with the coupler but I'm thinking that is just camera distorsion. Holler back

I'm still not getting your point.
The adjustment for the box is on TOP, the coupler is nowhere near the adjuster.

loosen the jam nut on top of the box and turn in adjuster to tighten the box.

Guys look at the photo. That big stamped steel nut is a lock nut, the piece that the shaft runs through is an adjuster, it uses a spanner wrench.

I do apologize. I am both humbled and impressed at the same time.

Thank you. I'm always willimg to learn. Sorry that I misunderstood you.

Thank You Commando1. The worm gear preload is the 'big' one if I'm not mistaken. The 'over center' or 'cross shaft' adjustment never did much for me. Turn it in too much and steering will bind. In other words coming out of a turn, the wheel won't return be itself. It will need minor input. (this is in way too far).

Before I drive out the roll pin and move the coupler out of the way am I going to be able to clean-up this amount of 'play' or look into a new steering gear? Video
