440 ID Question

440 ID Question - 04/27/14 02:57 AM

See pics of the ID pad on this 440. I've been told it is probably a warranty block since it doesn't have the VIN stamped on the side nor is there a "car line" identification on the top. Is there any other explanation?

In case you , and whomever told you , don't know this ... warranty wasn't the only way to get a block , there was also a service replacement SHORT BLOCK that was sold over the parts counter to ANYONE that wanted one.

The fact that the pad is stamped with the cubic inch size AND an assembly date tells you it was a SHORT BLOCK ASSEMBLY that info would not have stamped on a bare WARRANTY block ...

Look on the side of the block near a freeze plug hole for a small tag that would have the short engine assembly number., if the tag is gone there will be a hole , 1/8 or 3/16 were a rivet would have held the tag.

With a 1*8*71 casting date & a 8 12 71 non-HP assembly date - IMO it looks like someone removed the '72 c-body partial VIN (2C10xxxx) that was stamped on it.

JohnRR: I'll look.... thanks for the info.

6bblgt: Hmmm I must be missing something; I don't see where the Assembly date is shown as '71 nor do I see a partial VIN on the block stamping. What am I missing?

The numbers are plainly there on the side of the block . There are two 2s there and the rest of the number is under the rust . Just take a magnifying glass and look at the side of the block pic .

Why does the 440 stamp use two different 4's, 1 open and 1 closed top?

Why no H before the 440?
