Starter issues

Starter issues - 04/22/14 07:35 PM

So we got our car back together after a lot of changes... hoping someone can help us troubleshoot our current starter issue.

We have a 70 Charger that we finally got back together after a year of tranny/suspension work(saving money for parts). We moved the battery to the trunk with 2/0 welding wire. We bought a new 180lb powermaster high torque mini starter. We had issues with the car turning over slowly and though the starter was the issue. We are running 11.3:1 compression.

The issue is when we turn the key over sometimes the starter just wines and the engine isn't turned over. The other times the engine turns over in an instant and it's up and running.

Here is a video of what it sounds like when it doesn't engage the motor.

Obviously we should have asked for suggestions as it seems some people think powermaster is just overpriced junk... well this is the 2nd one we had to get from them so there could be some truth to that if this one is broke too. We are getting 10+v on the ignition wire while cranking and we are seeing almost all of the battery to the front of the car.

We also have an issue where the starter sounds like it is winding down when the engine is turned off. It shouldn't be on all the time obviously, but not sure what would cause that. Maybe a bad solenoid?

The attached picture is how we currently have the car wired.

What we are asking is if this is indeed a bad starter or might there be another cause that we overlooked?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I may be wrong but it seems to me that the battery should first go to one large starter relay terminal and from the other big relay terminal to the starter.

I would try running the battery ground to the rear frame rail. Then add a ground wire of the same size frome the frame or k-frame to the block. May cut down on the resistance in the long ground ran all the way from front to rear. Sounds like you may have some other issues with the starter or maybe the relay.

So it's not in the picture, but we also have a chassis ground from the engine to the chassis in the front of the car. Like I said before we are using 2/0 gauge welding cable and the engine turns over great when the starter actually engages. In all honesty we are trying to get out of taking the exhaust, headers, sparkplugs back off to try to get to the starter again. Though it sounds like we should try the old starter and see if it does the same thing to eliminate the wiring or the starter being the problem. The old starter worked, it just cranked the engine over very slowly.

Appreciate all the feedback though. It's very helpful to hear from people with different perspectives.

What kind initial timing are you running? You mentioned the stock starter was turning engine over slowly as well, it shouldn't have been too bad on a 11.3:1 motor. What did the 1st powermaster do?

The first starter was just a grey starter. We don't even know the brand. It's in the garage somewhere. Going to try to test that tonight if we can get some free time in the garage.

As far as the timing we haven't checked it yet as we just started it up since late last year. We will be looking at that next.

I can't speak to power master's quality because I haven't used one. You say this is your second one? If it's bad t9o, go with a parts store mini starter, it'll be cheaper, work great, and they come with a lifetime warranty. I prefer autozone because they save your info in their computer system via phone number, so if it fails 10 years from now you don't have to try and keep the reciept that long. You just give them your ph#, they look you up and give you a new part. At Napa, Advance, etc...you have to have your reciept because they're computers don't talk to each other like autozone's do. And they have remains and new. Guys with high comp dedicated race motors report great results too.

Ahh okay I see what you're saying. Yes this is my second power master. The first one we didn't even get to try to spin it. It came with the battery terminal sticking out of it with the wires exposed. It was just horrible. We got the new one and it was free of physical damage, but it sounds like it may be bad also. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow to see if they will replace it since it's only a couple months old. If not then we will be going to a parts store version.

Appreciate all the feedback. Just to confirm it is indeed the starter we are still going to drop the new one and put the older starter back to see if it does the same thing.

Or just save some $$ and go get a boneyard mini and slap it in there. They are powerful enough to get your job done at a fraction of the cost.

Well since it's brand new I would hope they would take care of it for free, but we will see soon enough haha...

Their should be a boot covering the lead from the motor to solenoid on all mini starters. Other than that their are no other wires on a mini starter to be exposed, just two terminals on the solenoid with contacts inside. If the motor lead was damaged it may have been an item already opened.
