had my transmission rebuilt last fall,drove the car 400 miles before putting it away for winter,started it today,and backed it out of the barn and let it sit ideling in neutral,after about 10 minutes i notice a small puddle under the car,look and its coming from the inspection cover to the transmission,i pulled the car back in the barn shut it off,and put the car cover back on,about 3 hours later i start it in park and let it run,then went through reverse,drive back to reverse,and put in park no leak,shut it off and let it sit,still no leak,was this just a case of running in neutral and some fliud coming from the over flow and dripping through the inspection cover???or the front seal not sealed?anyone else have this problem,would hate to have to pull the tranny and change the front seal.

those leaks can be surprisingly deceptive to pin down. I'd hose it clean at the car wash with the wand then come home & shoot some talcum powder on the sides of the trans then let it sit & check it out the next day. Someone priorly posted a neat trick for getting the powder up there but I spaced it.

Well when it sits for a while like that the converter will drain down on most 727's. Then the fluid level is real high when you start it and some fluid may have seeped past the seal and laid in the bellhousing. I would keep an eye on it and check it for the next few days to see if it still leaks or not. If it does not then see how it is thru the warm weather as you should be starting it every few days in the warm weather. Course if you see it still leaking then if it is trans fluid you will most likey be pulling the trans to see if its the pump seal, gasket , o-ring or something else. If it would end up that you have to pull the trans I would reccomend putting some trans oil dye in it as it helps see what was leaking if you have to pull it as you can use a floresent black lite to help see just whats leaking. I've been watching this post as I deal with the same thing. I pulled my tranny last year and checked the pump clearances, put a new seal in it, and new 0-ring gasket at the case. all back together: SAME EXACT THING!
So far, I've refused to pull the tranny again just because of a small leak, but I know its in my future. Problem is, I have no idea what to look at next.

will take it out this coming weekend and see what happens,put a few miles on it,i was thinking because i let it sit ideling in neutral that it was not flowing through the tranny and would seem overfull,and come out of the overflow and seep through the inspection cover.will keep you posted.dont want to have to drop the tranny either,on mine you have to pull the headers off also.

The vent for a 727 is in the pump. If the vehicle sat for a long time and then started in park, it is possible that it had drained back enough to puke out the vent when first started, especially if started in park.
I always tell my guys at the shop to start the "old" Torqueflites in neutral, actually every car for safety, but with the Torqueflites, they tend to blow fluid out the vent if the pan is too full.

it probably doesnt help that i have a deep tranny pan on it too.started it tonight let it run moved it back and fourth reverse to drive,and up to temp no leak so far,hopefully it was just drain back.

Another thing to consider with front pump, etc oil leaks. Take a good look at the torque converter. I've seen several with thin cracks in the snout that goes into the pump.
