Paint and Body work estimate price help needed. - 03/14/14 06:20 PM

I am going to get a quote to have my 89 Daytona painted for my my daughter -- it has the standard oxidized hood, roof etc. What is the going labor rate for striping and sanding the paint and doing minor body prep? How much time do you think I should allocate for total body prep (not including the time to paint the car)?

I just got an estimate of $35/hour for the prep. Is this in the park - way over - or a fair rate?

35hr sounds low to me.

35 is dirt cheap and I doubt you will have a happy ending.

What about Maco or a place like that.

Do you see the "paint roller" your car thread??

I don't know how they can keep the doors open at 35/hr unless they're working from home with no insurance for the business and charging ALL materials on top of that.

Local average bodyshop rate around here is 65/hr...

I restore cars (do not do new car collision work)I've been restoring for 16 + years.
My current going rate is 65/hr for most jobs. Electrical and custom work ranges between 75-90/hr.

35/hr is quite low. I'd be very cautious about choosing a restoration or paint shop just on price point alone.

Too bad you're not closer, I'd have you bring it over and I'd give you the moparts member discount.

Maaco did this for me & it got nothing but constant oohs and ahhs whenever I drove it. Not sure how long it would have lasted (I sold it). I remember the "roller" paint thread from way back & I always wanted to do that.

Exactly!!!! You need to see their work before you decide on what to spend, and find out if paint material is included.

Look at some of their work, I know a guy not too far from you that was charging $30 and hour and thinking of up. Does a lot of high quality Mopars and has been doing it for years. He does have a shop at his house but it is a pretty nice one. Needless to say he is backed up for 2 years (we're 18 months out at this point on the 67 vert I am working on up here) and he really doesn't do common paint jobs. Many he from the area probably know the guy I am referring to and knwo his work. Point is just cause the price is low don't mean their a joke, it might be the area, if they cant show you their work then pass. Most restorers/painters have a relationship with their customers due to the time it take and most are more than willing to show off there ride and willing to help their "friend" out.
