Tuff steering wheel adapters... School me. - 02/15/14 03:48 PM

Like the title says, let's talk about tuff steering wheel adapters. Are they all the same? I've used many of these things over the years and never really paid any attention to what they were off of. The only time I had one that didn't fit is when I tried to put one on my old Trailduster. I think the shaft on the TD didn't have a key way like the adapter. Always assumed it was because it was four wheel drive, but that was a long time ago.

The E body doesn't need an adapter, IIRC there's a 70 only B body adapter, and the 71-2 B body adapter, IIRC the trucks are separate enities, I don't know if A bodies were optioned with tuff wheels (nor do I care )

If your Trailduster had a tilt wheel then the column was actually a GM part and would take a different adapter than the usual Mopar.

Yeah, I know E-bodies don't use them. In the past, I have got them off of Volares, Aspens, Miradas, Cordobas, 2 wheel drive trucks and I've used them all on A-bodies with no problems which always led me to believe they were all the same.

Do tell... What's the difference?

When I got my 71 RR, it had one of those aftermarket tuff wheels that's a little fatter and a little smaller in diameter. I pulled it and the adapter off and just went with the standard RR steering wheel as I already have three cars with tuff wheels. I noticed the adapter had some splines ground out of it. I always figured it was a cheap fix to center the wheel. It had been like that since like 1996 with no issues though.

I can tell you an adapter from an a-body will fit a non tilt 2wd truck, however a 4wd truck takes an adapter all its own

Might be because the older 4x4 trucks had no real way to correct steering wheel position after alignment etc. So maybe the double spline key was eliminated? Can't recall, been years.

No E-body, they never had a Tuff Wheel. But the accordion style adapter on E-bodies will hold a Tuff wheel.

I have pulled the same adapters (the one on the left in the above picture) from 71-74 B bodies, F bodies, 78-79 trucks without tilt (have the master spline, but this is an easy fix to use it in a car) and 1 out of an 81? K-car.

Both in the pics will fit all bodies, the right one is an E-body only and the shorter one was on A,B,F bodies and trucks. As far as trucks I have found all the ones I have installed Tuff wheels on had no master splines. I have a tuff wheel on my 83 4x4 with the short adapter. I also have a tuff wheel on my 69 Dart with the short adapter but the adapter has a circumference larger than the column so there is a mismatch if you look closely at it.

Still waiting for clarification on this statement.
