1968 Charger RT 44-red stripe tire question/update - 01/22/14 02:56 AM

I bought a 68 Charger RT about 10 years ago and made sure that the motor and trans were original but never till today have I bothered to decode the Fender Tag.

It was built on JAN-19-68 and is a Factory painted AA1 Car. But when it came to the tires it had code # 44 which the book I had said red stripe tires. MY QUESTION IS: What wheels came with those tires? Was it just the Road Wheels or stock steel wheels?
I know the build sheet behind the back seat in LONG gone as the guy I bought it from had pulled the back seat out sometime around 1976 and thought to himself " what the hell is that piece of paper" and pulled it out.........Couldnt read it.......so he told me he threw it away!!!!!! SO, unless there is another one in the front seats somewhere I dont have a buildsheet.

Can anyone enlighten me.

Wheels/wheel covers were a separate option from tires, so you cannot determine which wheel the car had by the tire option.

FYI: Your Charger may or may not have built on Jan 19. That date is referred to as the SPD (Scheduled Production Date). It is common for cars to be built days, sometimes weeks, before or after that date.

The AA silver paint is a great color. You may or may not know that it was the only color that had an extra charge of $22 for buffing.

My charger's fender tag shows 44 - F70 x 14” RSW . The build sheet shows 16B for steel wheels painted black.

I may never know what wheels came on if I cant find another build sheet in the car then....

One more question, Were drip rail moulding a option?

According to my tag, my car show's wheel well mouldings, AM radio as the only options! but has a factory tach and AM/FM radio in it?

No power steering, brakes, tach, console, vinyl top....none of the cool options from that era. The guy I bought it from bought it in 76 and drove it one year and put it away till I bought it in 2004.

Also could still be in car in another location. Behind driver seat rear cover, above glove box top,in vinyl top or under carpet.

Unless your car is BLACK - the car had full wheel covers on it.

One clue to the wheels would be evidence of red paint on the drums, factory RED paint = chrome "ROAD" wheels.

per the fender tag '68 Charger R/Ts were STANDARD with:
bucket seats (b/4 top line)
drip rail, belt line, & wheel lip mouldings (2/5 3/0 7/8 second line from the bottom)
3.23 rear gears (AX/4 second line from the bottom)
"bumblebee stripe" (S/? second line from the bottom) was STANDARD on a R/T (Hamtramck built cars were left blank for a 310 BLACK stripe)
83 440HP 4bbl engine, 5 automatic transmission, & 44 F70-14 "red stripe" Goodyear SPEEDWAY tires. (bottom line)

AM/FM wasn't available from the factory in a '68 b-body - it was in the dealer accessory catalog.

Re: 1968 Charger RT Fender Tag Question. 44-red stripe tire - 01/24/14 01:00 AM

I pulled the wheels off today and could not find any red paint what so ever. They were however painted gloss black at one time.... BUT, under the gloss black where the wheel had seated on the drums was a semi or flat black. Were the drum painted a black at all on the face's or could that be paint from the back of the original wheel when it was installed at the factory?

#2 QUESTION.

With red line tires, could you have hubcaps with red lines?

#3 QUESTION.
Were the steel wheels always painted body color in 68 or could my silver car of had black wheels with red lines?

Thanks!

Re: 1968 Charger RT Fender Tag Question. 44-red stripe tire - 01/24/14 01:17 AM

The face of the brake drums were painted red SO rust wouldn't show thru the holes in the "ROAD" wheels - they were unpainted otherwise.

Re: 1968 Charger RT Fender Tag Question. 44-red stripe tire - 01/24/14 01:21 AM

'68 Charger R/T was STANDARD with "red streak" tires & "hub caps". The '68 hub cap doesn't have a red line, that was new for '69. Wheels with hub caps are the same color as the car in '68. Judging by the lack of OPTIONs, someone was shopping on a budget I'd bet silver wheels & hub caps when NEW! Followed closely by some "MAGS".

1 of each now! HEMI auto/440 auto/HEMI 4-spd/440 4-spd

The 440 auto car is currently RED (I should looked at your user name ). The additional tags are for inspector's stamps.

I wish there was a registry. I would like to know how many were actually made. Here is mine. My son and me were about to wash it. Sorry for the dirty pic.
