1985 Dodge D-150 charging "issue"

today I started my truck, the ignition lock cylinder broke, the key just spins in circles, well all the accessories were left in the "on" position when it broke, blower motor works, wipers, etc. etc. well I went and used a screwdriver and jumped the truck via the relay on the wheel well, it did not start, battery dead... it had to be jumped almost immediately, checked the volts on the battery and it was only putting out 9volts, tried to drive it home for it to only die, I have never had charging issues until the ignition "broke" today, would the ignition issue I am having, have anything to do with the "charging system"? sorry if I am not explaining it the greatest, I am not just getting feeling back into my toes and fingers, its -33d with wind-chill and I was pulled 13 miles home....almost frozen to death!!

Yeah, cooled right off today, huh? (I'm in Huron.) My best guess: battery froze (a discharged battery will freeze, whereas a charged battery won't). Once frozen, it couldn't be charged, of course. Take it inside, thaw it out, charge it, and have it tested at a parts store.

its in the shed now plugged in and battery charger on it....will that work? also I started 10mins before it broke ( it actually backfired through the carb and died) so when I went to re-start it, it broke, and it was only 5 mins max the truck set there not running, so im thinking the battery was not froze, maybe something in the ignition cylinder has something to do with it being "dead"

If the battery really is frozen, you shouldn't put a charger on it. You should thaw it first. I had one freeze recently (vehicle wasn't driven for a long time), so I brought it into my basement, and the next evening, put a charger on it. It tested good after the charge (load test and conductance test were both good). Putting a charge to a frozen battery will probably ruin it, and there is a chance it could explode.

fix the lock, take care of the battery issue, get it started/running then if it ain't charging holler back & we'll go from there & take care of it. EDIT Batteries (etc) unlike people/animals only get as cold as ambient temps & no colder & ain't affected by wind chill (tho WC will wick away heat faster down to the ambient temp level but no lower) & it did start so I'd GUESS that it was somewhat charged & was not cold enough to freeze it tho for functionality they say a batt loses half of its power when it reaches zero F iirc. Holler when you can
