E body dash harness replacement

E body dash harness replacement - 12/09/13 07:48 PM

Any tips or do's and don't s for replacing the dash harness on a 70 E body? I hate to remove seats and console, but.
I have a new M&H harness, so hope all of it is plug and go.
Colors match the schematic,,,,,
Should I have let Santas elf install it?
Any help is appreciated.

That's the easy part, the seats and console.

Start with those and then remove the piller trim and lower kick panels, then drop the steering column. Then remove the whole dash, 6 screws.

Unbolt the fuse block and much more.

Someone around has a list made up, I'll wait for them to post it.

I've done it 3 times so far.

For the first time?

I don't know how many hours? Maybe 8 hours. And yes it can be done by yourself, I have done 3 times by myself. Always work alone.

Sure a helper when it goes in or out would be helpful but by no means absolutely necessary.

I cut the glass out by myself also, it makes it much easier but not necessary.

And it is plug and play and all the colors match up to the service manual.

I hooked up the M&H dash harness in my cuda with the seats out, lying on my back. It was a PITA and I was shocked when the car actually started with I turned the key.

I have the dash removal order on my work laptop. When I get in tomorrow I will post it up.

I just replaced my dash harness a few weeks ago in my 70 barracuda convertible. I left the dash in and the seats in. It only took a couple of hours.

And you'll be a master of yoga and the game Twister when you are done. Unless you need to get in there for other reasons, the wiring job is probably faster leaving the dash in than pulling everything out, rewiring, and then re-installing everything.

Sorry it took two days.......

1)Open Hood
2)Remove four plugged wire harnesses from bulk head
3)Remove two nuts holding bulkhead in place
4)Open doors
5)Remove A piller trim and associated trim
6)Remove Kick Panels and associated trim
7)Unplug both door jamb light switches
8)Unplug E Brake warning wire
9)Unplug tail light harness
10)Unplug dimmer Switch
11)Reach up and unplug heater box
12)Unplug console light
13)Disconnect antenna
14)At the heater control, disconnect both heater cables
15)Unplug both steering coloumn harnesses
16)Unplug brake pedal switch, both wires
17)Undo both vent cables and let them hang
18)Remove 3 steering column bolts at firewall
19)Remove to nuts on steering column at the dash
20)Lower column and allow to hang
21)Remove 4 bolts at windshield using a 1/4 drive flex
22)Remove 2 bolts at door pillars
23)Prepare for a heavy dash to fall on your lap
24)Yell to wife for help
25) Have a cold beer, you're done

See 25 easy steps....It sounds like a lot, but with the dash assembly out and on the bench you can do a hundred things that you can't easily do in the car....Most important: INSPECT ALL THE WIRING

I agree taking out the dash is the only right way to do it, imo.

I don't see how you could get it back in correctly from under the dash, although I have never done it that way.

You would not believe how simple it is.

It was given to me by my next door neighbor. Her late husband built it to hold wood when he using his table saw. It is nothing more than a piece of angle iron and I use vise grips to clamp it to the angle iron. It's adjustable up and down and that's about it.
