Update - Late A Front Spindle Dimensions

Update - Late A Front Spindle Dimensions - 12/08/13 02:24 AM

I have been fighting vibration and a little bit of slop on my left front wheel. The car is a '70E with repop late A body spindles. The bearings, especially the outer, seem to fit a little loose on the spindle. I replaced bearings with new Timkens and not much better. Shimming the adjusting nut to get "perfect" adjustment helped a little but it still loose.

Today I measured spindle diameter at the bearing location with digital caliper. Measurements are:

Left Right
inner outer inner outer
obs 1 1.375 0.7445 1.375 0.7455
obs 2 1.3745 0.7435 1.375 0.7455
obs 3 1.375 0.7425 1.379 0.75

avg 1.375 0.744 1.376 0.747

The left measures smaller but I don't have specs.

Does anybody have diameter specs for the late A spindles?

I have a Factory '74 Service Manual in front of me and cannot find those spindle specs.

Where was it in the service manual you were looking at?

And what specific year and model(s) manual was that?

Update... I never did get the spindle dimensions. And for Autoxcuda, no my FSM does not have dimensions for the '70 spindle. I had not looked as I knew they would be different from the late A.

I wound up sending the spindle back to the vendor. Apparently he did not have exact dimensions either but he checked against both old spindles, new repops and test fit bearings. He said mine was on the small side. Apparently "correct" inside roller bearing clearance is .5 thousand'th. My left small side was .003 smaller than my right and that's too much.

Bottom line he is sending me a new left spindle at significant discount. Pretty fair I think as it has been several years since I bought them. I'll get it bolted back together shortly but road test will have to wait until the salt clears.
