727 Speedometer Pinion - Where To Buy One? - 12/13/08 08:14 PM

I have changed the gear in my 70 Dart from a 3:23 to a 3:55 and run 255-60/15 (27")tires on the back. I need a 35 tooth speedometer pinion gear; P/N 2538935 according to the Moparts tech section.

Where is a good place to get on of these?

The math for the combo in the OP comes out to 34.4, when the decimal is less than .5 it's best to go with the smaller gear, this will make the speedo read a little high which avoids speeding tickets.

The number for some gears has changed, the new one for the 34 is 52068156.

I just ordered one from Yearone, listed for $29.95. They called and said the price is now $69.95!! I cancelled.

Let me know if you find a source for less $...

There's a bunch of 'em listed in tranny parts here for a good price. Just bought a couple from him and it was a quick, easy deal. THEN I found out I need the short shaft style, still looking for a deal on one of them...
That's the way the cookie crumbles it seems.

do you have an actual measured 27" on your rear tires(s)? by putting a flat piece of stock on top of one of your rear tires & measuring from the bottom side if it down to the ground. tires of the same size but different brands will have a different height/circumference. Just want you to get it right the 1st time.

I'll go with the 34 tooth gear and it looks like there is one in the transmission section.

I am not sure if I have a long or short shaft and will pull it out tomorrow to make sure.

Thanks-

Mechanical speedo will be the long shaft, electronic speedo is the short shaft. How to tell? If it's an electrical connector with 3 wires hooked up it ain't mechanical. If it's got the sleeved cable coming off it ain't electronic. I think the short shaft speedo came about in the early 90's with the proliferation of computerization, but at any rate I'd be willing to wager a small confectionary yours is the mechanical speedo that will use the long shaft.

The "Bag" (ebay) $10-15 seems to the be going rate for used. NEW have gone out of sight. I paid $15 for a new 40t about two years ago now triple that.
