A body 8-3/4 brakes are unique. 8-1/4 brakes will not fit with stock A body 8-3/4 axles, the offsets are different.

I'd like to know more about this.
The "offset" is built into the brake supports, right? Why couldn't an 8 1/4" brake setup work? They physically fit the 8 3/4 housing. Is it a matter of the amount of axle shaft and hub that sticks out of the housing? I have mixed and matched parts here many times and it worked out fine. Maybe I got lucky?

A Body 8 3/4 (Small bolt pattern) brakes do not interchange. 4 1/2" bolt pattern parts will interchange from a 8 1/4 to a 8 3/4 and also a 9 1/4 and a Dana.

i realize the 8 3/4 (4") have the narrow folded parking brake strut
which is unique and the shoes are also narrower at
1 3/4 but thought all the other hardware would interchange?

Depending on the body platform yes , EXCEPT for small bolt pattern A bodies , the axle offset is different, it's a 1/4 LESS than everything else EXCEPT for 66-69(70 ???), B bodies with 7.25 rear and 10" brakes , they have the same offset as the small bolt A body.

What year rear do you want to pull the brakes off of ?

I would have to look at my 69 parts manual to confirm but I want to say NO on swapping the backing plates.

Your question is very cryptic and having to drag the info out of a person makes it harder to answer. Just an FYI , it's best to list as much info as possible when asking a question.

The shoes and the hardware are readily available , it took me less than 5 minutes to find the part numbers on rockauto.com, the hard parts to find will be the rear drums., I don't know if they are still available and if they are they will not be the flared drums as were found originally on your car.

..all good points John.
Tx for the info...i know where an 8 1/4 A body rear is and wondered if just the hardware could be transferred to my 8 3/4.

A body 8-1/4's are all large bolt pattern and large center register, drums wont fit.
