904 not going into 3rd all the time..... - 07/28/13 12:35 PM
Hello all.....the 904 trans in my dart shifts early from 1st to 2nd.....going into drive, it does sometimes sometimes it doesnt. Just out aan AFB Ihad laying around the other day.....could it be the kickdown cabke needs adjusting? Im sure it coukd use a new trans, but just trying to get it right...dont wanna buy a new one right now, as I plan on having the 340 built in a stout manner maybe the winter or spring.
If I shift manually from 1st to 2nd does fine, chiros the tires.....
thanks for any help in advance, this weekend is the first chsnce ive had to really work on it

Yes shorten the kikcdown linkage a bit & see what happens. Keep track of the amount (turns) so you have a baseline & can set it back if need be & that'd be an easy solution if that is it. 2-3 shift valve may be hanging up (worst case) or maybe just need a band adjustment but I'm just guessing. I'd wait for Kunkel to come to as he's the man on this

904 in a Dart should be linkage. What are you running that has a cable? I have my trannies set to be in 3rd before 35 mph on a light cruise. Need to be in 3rd when driving around town at low speeds. It won't shift into 3rd when floored before about 80 mph unless I lift off the gas.

if you cover the primaries and it does not die ...then you probably got a vacuum leak...
it should die if you cover the primaries..

Is the kickdown cable or linkage? Does the AFB you're using have the correct Mopar throttle lever extension?

The generic GM throttle levers found on most aftermarket carbs doesn't work with factory Mopar linkage that's why you need the Mopar throttle lever extension. The AFB and Edelbrock need the part number 1481 shown below.
The archives has pics of various linkage configurations for reference.
