Burning Sparkplug Wire Boots - 07/26/13 10:08 PM
I've got Hooker headers on my 440 in my pickup. It keeps burning the sparkplug wire boots. I want to prevent arcing and misfire. Any suggestions on how to correct this? Does anyone make boots that will withstand the high heat?

We have Hookers on the 360.My 65 440 has 2 inch TTIs and the 62 413 has 2 1/8 tubes. All have Taylor Spiro Pros.Mine are at least 12 years old and the others are at least 5 years.None melted. The 62 does have an insulated cover on 7 as its real close. My TTIs are real close and they dont melt or miss.Rocky

I'm just strickly brainstorming on a Fri night, could a person wrap a thin piece of asbestos or similar insulation around the boot & maybe paint it to make it presentable. Someone way back in Chrysler Power magazine iirc adapted a set of metal ends of some sort that came on a set of factory plug wires & it was a 4 or 6 cyl as they needed more than 1 set & it was the only thing they ever found that worked (2.2?). Unless there's a plug with a shorter insulator to gain some air space again just thinking out loud

On my setup (BB low deck, Ed heads, TTI's) standard wire sets didn't work out very well. Boot angles weren't right and I burned one or two. I switched to MSD adjustable boot wires and problem solved. Adjusting the boots to get best clearance worked. Worth a look in your situation.

The 9003's are universal and you can bend the boot for header clearance.
This guy has em cheap and you can get different boots for the dist. end.

Please post pictures. We'd love to see pictures of the problem areas. Closer to the spark plug/primary the better. Thanks .. We've made a bunch of sets for Hookers. Sometimes I swear they jig the same parts numbers differently. . Thanks much.

i have these little fireproof socks on my plug wires next to headers. they work well.

My headers turned a couple MSD wire boots into marshmallow material. I replaced them with Taylor spiro pro wires with these types of boots, they work great.

Mine are fine with the 440 and hookers. Just need the angles in the right areas.

I'm running straight boots on the current wires. I can't see where changing the angles is going to solve this problem. It is only the the last 3/4 of an inch of the boots that burn. They are just too close on numbers 4,6,3 and 5. The front and rear cylinders on each side are fine. I tried dimpling the pipes a bit, but doesn't help the situation, as I can't get much more clearance. Maybe ceramics are the way to go, but if the diameter of the boot is any larger than the ones I have, they may not clear the headers.

Some boots are just plain junk. I think the higher the silicone content the more heat resistant they are.

Also an incorrectly tuned motor can have excessive exhaust heat and be hard on boots.

Re: Burning Sparkplug Wire Boots - 07/28/13 08:30 PM
Just an FYI.. Natural-color Heat Resistant Boots have a heat rating of 1500 degrees. When they add a color, it divides that number in half. The boot then takes on the heat rating of the die in the fabric. That's why the dye is gone in the hotter areas of your boots. If the correct type boots are used at each cylinder plug, everything should work ok.

Did you try using the "shorty" spark plugs ? I do on 4 of the cyls & never burn my Accel 8mm boots with Hooker Comp headers

Look @ summit for Taylor heat shield # 2570 or 2573 perhaps this might help

Has anybody used exhaust heat wrap? I've been wondering about wrapping my header pipes near my plug wires and then using a higher heat rated plug wire. I suppose I could always add the fiberglass wire sleeves for added protection.
