1996 Dodge Ram won't start, again. - 07/06/13 02:51 AM

My 96' Ram 1500 5.9 truck seems to be having a problem and won't start. Turn on the truck and it turns over, but won't fire. I can feather the throttle and still nothing. I hold the gas pedal all the way down and it will try to fire, but ends up just flooding and making sounds like pinging when it turns over. This seems to happen in er weather though. I had replaced the idle control valve about six months ago, which solved a similar problem it had. Checked fuel pressure, fine. Replaced with a new battery since the die hard was not holding a charge anymore, still no change. I was able to get it running once, it idled for a bit, but as soon as I put it in drive, it died and would start again ( but would turn over). Any ideas what could be wrong?

Timing chain??? Better still, have someone with a scanner to watch cam/crank sync....96 is OBD2 so lots of info you may need.

My mechanic told me to change the idle control valve and the throttle position sensor at the same time when I had idle issues with my 5.9.

Lots of things could cause this. If your sure its not fuel related there are many things in the fire area to cause a problem. Weak plugs or wires, coil, pickup plate in distributor, crank sensor and so on. A person with a good scan tool that knows how to read it could help you there. The problem with todays vehicles is there are so many things to cause a certain problem you have to have good diagnostic skills or play hit and miss with parts which at todays prices is costly. Hope you can find it.
