Stock 440 pushrods question - 06/27/13 03:55 AM

Are factory 440 pushrods from different year motors the same? If not what's their differences? Are 1967 and 1969 pushrods interchangeable?

No difference. They should be the same length.

67 and back used a tapered pushed with a different lifter cup to match.

1/4 inch ball on the lifter side The later ones are 5/16 on both ends, do not put the 1/4 inch lifter end in the rocker arm It will push through in about 300 to 500 miles, don't ask me how I know that

That and the early rods are longer. When I got my 66 440 it had a bent push rod.Got one from the dealer. This was in 69.It was way too short.Back to the dealer and the old parts guy was there.Showed him the bent one and the new one.Bent was longer than what I got.He says I know what you need.Walks in and gets me a 66 67 Push rod.It was longer than the 68.This was just a basic stock rebuild.Rocky

This answer is why you really have to watch who you take info from this site..

You can use 68 and newer on all 440's but you must change the LIFTERS and the PUSHRODS to the 68 and newer design... 67 and older were different.....

As mention 67 and prior use a tappered rod and different lifter. I have a set of each if needed, however it's probably best just to swap then out w/ new ones.

In any case, you should check the lifter pre-load. It's possible the stock length push rods won't work anyway and you'll have to have custom ones made...unless you're using adjustable rockers...

You are correct on telling him to check for proper preload and length but adjustable rockers also need to have the correct type and length pushrods. You don't want too many threads showing under the rocker to make up for pushrods that are too short.

Thanks everyone. I figured the '67's pushrods were different than '68 and newer but wasn't sure.
Compcams lists a different lifter for the '67 440's. I called Compcams and their tech told me the difference in lifters was due to how the oil flowed through the pushrods up to the rocker arms. Nice, huh.

I will be measuring my lifter preload and I do not have adjustable rockers. Before measuring preload should I pump up the lifters in a container of oil before setting them into the motor?

Leave them empty

Check the pushrods for lifter preload one set at a time with the piston at TDC on the firing stroke Number them with the cylinders and rocker arms that go with tat cylinder, don't be afraid to change, mix, them around if needed

The real difference is in lifters which of course require different pushrods. Using 69 up lifters will allow all early RB engines to use later pushrods. If you are using an aftermarket cam, you'll undoubtedly use later (69 up) lifters allowing later pushrods.

Should preload be between .020" and .030"?

I ran a .500 lift Isky hyd cam for years in my 440.Used the stock rockers and push rods.Never had any problems. That was back in late 60s early 70s.Sig Erson came out with adjustable rockers so I bought a set.Now they are still in use with Crane 3/8 alloy push rods.Rocky

I have used .015(1/4 turn on adjustable rockers with 3/8x24 thread adjusters) to .045(3/4 turn) hot with no noticeable differences at the track or on the engine dyno, any more slow the car down as did looser

So then there is a wide range that the preload can be.
If the preload is too much or not enought would it cause a ticking sound?
