Water in the crankcase, how to flush? - 06/24/13 05:57 AM

OK guys,

the friend that put the 318 into my 72 Fury didnt get the hood on for six months. Had the air cleaner on it so the carb wasnt stuck at all. But it go into the crankcase and somehow into the cyls.

I ended up pulling the plugs and getting the engine unstuck. The water had oil in it so it didnt rust anything up. I did get it to fire on primed gas.

But there is still milky oil in it. What is the best way to flush it all out?

I was planning on draining it and adding new oil/filter then running it for a short time then draining that and putting new oil/filter in it for good.

Or is there a better way? Any help appreciated.

DRAIN the milky oil ....new filter and oil ...spin the motor with the starter NO PLUGS in it til you get pressure THEN plugs in and fire it up. Run for awhile idling - no load - Then watch condition of the oil. Change then again when needed.

Drain the pan.Get a few gallons of kerosene and pour it in the pan.Let it set for a day.then drain and flush with a gallon of kerosene.Then fill with oil and new filter.If you had water that bad that motor will probally self destruct.Carb covered only way to get water in the pan is no spark plugs,no valve covers.or bad head gaskets.Good luck with it sounds like you will need it.Rocky

?? if it had enough H2O in it to freeze the motor that's not good. How much water was in it when you drained the oil? I'd probably shoot an good amount of WD40 in each cylinder and crank it over a bunch w/o plugs before you fire it. It's probably got a bunch of moisture in the crank case as well.

Take the drain plug out & drain it & put several more qts of oil in the fill cap to flush what's left in the bottom of the pan out. Put the drain plug back in & add several qts of oil & a filter & drill prime it & hand turn the crank to the 2 sweet spots to where both heads are being oiled to flush the complete oiling system with fresh oil. Then drain the pan again & might put several more qts into the fill cap to completely flush the bottom of the pan sump like before. Your going this far so might as well try & get as much out of there as you can. Then install the drain plug & add new oil & filter & it's already primed

I'd probably drop the pan, hose everything down w/ brake clean, wipe and put the pan back on. That or just pull the junk and pick up another RUNNING 318 for a hundred or 2.

I agree flush with the kerosene, but if you have already ran it with the milkshake in there I would bet you have already wiped the bearings, and it wont be long before you get the knock, knock, knock.

I lost a head gasket on a 460, shut it down in under a minute of failure. I flushed, and oiled, and re-oiled, thought all was good, but in under 5000 miles I lost the bottom bearings.

At least rainwater is a lot less damaging than anti-freeze... which will wipe the bearings quickly.
