swapping in a 4.0 - 05/19/13 04:16 AM

Brother inlaw is pulling his 232 in his hornet to drop in a 4.0.
What needs to be done to bolt it to the 904? They plan to use the stock converter and the 232 balancer. Will that even work? I just don't want him ending up messing the motor up and having to find another

leave the 4.0 balancer alone, convert to serpentine. are you running EFI? if so you need a crank sensor so you will have to modify your bell and get iirc an a915 flex plate that will bolt to your converter. also keep inmind the 4.0 was never carbyreted so there is no provision for a fuel pump. the stock 232 mounts will bolt to your 4.0 if its pre 99? (if it has a distributor) one hole will need to be enlarged and then use a m12x1.50 bolt where the knock sensor would have been. you will also need to run your oil pump and pick up and pan from the 232. if you want to be slick find a cherokee thats 2wd and get the aw4 od trans and driveshaft, harness and controller and run over drive. you can adapt the speedo fairly easy, driveshaft runs 1310 joints so the yoke swap is cake, then you may have to fiddle with length but its all very doable. I have a4.0 aw4 and the efi etc in a gremlin when i pulled out the 232 and bw cast iron trans, if your hornet has the 904 your ahead of the game and dont have to mess with the crossmember. youll be surprised how easy it will bolt together, the 4.0 is based on the old 232 258 engine family. just keep in mind if you have the bw trans the bell housing is different than a 904/727 but thats 71 and earlier.

Yet they had them behind Several even 360s. Thanks for rhetorically reply. I told him to ask on the forums before he screwed something up.
