Hardest tool I ever had to find

Hardest tool I ever had to find - 05/06/13 02:27 PM

Even Googlizing the crap out of it a thousand different ways produced almost zero results.
It's a ball joint adapter tool C-4034.
I can't even find a picture of it except a crude illustration in the FSM.
Do I even really need it?

Thanks. So it's a 2-9/64ths deep socket (which you need for the lower ball joint) as opposed to the C-3561 2-9/64ths standard socket (used on the upper ball joint). Yes?

Nobody has the deep socket. They all show the standard socket.

Re: Hardest tool I ever had to find - 05/06/13 04:27 PM

Some of the older ball joints had more of a dome shape on top, thus the reason for a deep well socket. Otherwise the standard depth socket will work on most.

Re: Hardest tool I ever had to find - 05/06/13 04:33 PM

sorry, maybe I am confused.

the number you gave was to remove and replace the upper ball joint.

I am unaware of any lower ball joint threaded into the lower control arm, but have only worked on a few mopars so could be mistaken.

three sizes exist for the uppper,
small for early a
med for pretty much every car otherwise
and large for trucks.

I have seen the shallow version sold for as cheap as 12 bucks.
I own the deeper version from snapon but that ran like 90 bucks with the 3/4 to 1/2 adapter.

if you are looking for a lower ball joint socket, I have never seen one.

No, you're good. As usual, it's me.
Since I have Press-in lower ball joints, it's a moot point about a socket for the lowers. Yes?
Or am I still out in far left field?

Re: Hardest tool I ever had to find - 05/06/13 05:03 PM

no sockets for pressed in correct.

When tools become idiotly priced (or it takes a week to be delivered, in my case) it can sometimes by smart to just make your own.

Here's a LCA balljoint-tool I drew up and had lasercut locally up for my '60 NewYorker, which has threaded balljoints.
After the cutting I welded everything together and was able to change the balljoints...

76 New yorker.

From the FSM:

"Lower Ball Joints.
Installation:
(1) Press in new ball joint into lower control arm using assembled Tool C-4212.
(2) Place a new seal over ball joint with Adaptor Tool C-4034 and press retainer portion of seal down on ball joint housing until it is securely locked in position."

Looks like it's just a SLEEVE that is open on one end and closed , except for a centering hole on the other end used to push the seal in place and clearing the ball joint.

You could probably use a piece of PVC or pipe of the appropriate size and the seal into place ????

I have that C-4212 ball joint press tool, and will have to see if that Adapter tool, C-4034 is with it.
Don't know what good it will do you though, if i have it.

Brought home the ball joint tool, from my storage locker, to get a picture of it.
No C-4034 tool.
Have other adapters for the press, but i guess i never had a C-4034, because it never came with the press, when i bought it, way back in the old days.
Do you have the C-4212 press?

The maker of Miller Tools is also the maker of OTC Tools.

Go to their website, OTCTools.com, they have several professional series ball joint kits, see what they have. Their tech support might be able to help.

Did that. No help unless I can find an engineer there who will in his spare time sift through a million pcs. of old paperwork to find the specs on what it is. They're looking at the same pic you and I are.

Re: Hardest tool I ever had to find - 05/09/13 03:23 PM

I've had a very hard (impossible still) time finding 2 tools

1) Miller tool C-4134 - Steering column centering tool
2) Matco DF-3110 - wheel lip moulding screw removal tool
(or equivalent snap on)

Both were discontinued decades ago....
I've search for years...
begged and pleaded
and even prayed...

Dear mopar lord...
Please hear my cries and bring me my coveted tools...
(and while you're at it grant me an NOS driver side quarter panel
for a 70 Dodge Coronet)
Amen!

How did you ever get a 4spd in your Chrysler? I've never seen ball joint adapter tool C-4034.... But I could have those balljoints changed without the tool pretty quickly.... I have all sorts of press adapters, I've got a BFH & I've got a torch...

I was wondering the same thing

The part he wants is for putting the seal in place, that is the easy part of the job. I can't even imagine a tech using the press to put the seal on.

Time is money

I looked in my old Miller Tool catalogs, for what that C-4134 tool looks like.
I might have that.
Next time i go over my storage locker, let me rummage through my tool boxes.
That tool sure looks familiar to me.

I was thinking that too.
The ball joint is the hard part of the job.
The seal can be easily installed without a specialty tool, but i guess it would make that part of the job, a bit easier.
