pinion seal... this is confusing

pinion seal... this is confusing - 04/19/13 09:45 PM

what should be the pinion seal on my 489 ?

I have at this moment the 7215 national seal, but have failed twice in 3 or 4 years

yes I have read all the guides about the 8.75 axle, but trust me is still confusing. Specially when you go to rockauto and appears 3 or 4 diff seals.

5126 for the 489 and 9.25 rears. A 7216 is for the 742.

The 5126 number is correct for National or Timken seals, and available at almost all part stores. The 7215 from what I have researched is for the 657 third member.

found on a National seal PDF chart there is an outer diameter difference between 7215 and 5126 seals, being the fist one bigger by 0.183" thats too much diff to make it fit on my case.

I don't get it.

The 5126 seal fits 489 and 741 castings.

Don't use an aftermarket leather seal. They always leak.

The u/joint size can be the same in all three 8 3/4 case set ups depending on the application even a lot of the half ton 4X4's used the small joint.

I don't normally sell the cross-shaft separately, but I may have an extra pair.
