470 stroker carb selection - 02/25/13 04:40 AM

Okay folks, I'm trying to select a carb for my 470 in my '71 Charger. Here are the specs on the engine:

470 ci
10.0:1 compression ratio
440 source CNC ported aluminum heads

Hughes camshaft: .598/.606 lift, 242/246 duration at .050, 108* lsa (1.6 rockers included)

6500 redline

Headers, 2 1/2 duals
should weigh about 3600
auto tranny, 3.91 gears

mostly street use with a few trips to the track per season.

I'm looking for a vacuum secondary, electric choke.

Suggestions have been the following:

850 holley dual feed 4150 (80531)

870 holley street avenger (80870)

770 proform street series (67258)

What are y'all's thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance!

I like the 850 dual feed for that engine. It is just a good design all around. I played with the Holley avenger series carbs. I don't like the springs in them. I also had some tuning concerns with my proform carb, to me Holley double pumpers work awesome!

Vacuum sec carbs certainly have their place, but you do not need one with those inches and gears. I would suggest a DP, but they are usually very rich in the transitions for the street.

What type of intake? Dual or single plane? What is more important, top power or driveability? Can you tune the carb or will it be run without changes?

And I would be surprised if a 470" will pull all the way to 6,500 with those heads and a 240ish cam. My 500" has ported Eddies and it is done by 6,200 or so with cams in the 260* range.

I have a Holley 800DP on my 470" which is not a lot different than yours. Runs good, good throttle response etc. I don't run a choke and I'm in WI, you're in TX so I don't think you need one either but that's just my

I run a 950 Quick Fuel on my 470. Easy to tune and much better than the 830 Quick Fuel I had on it before.

The intake is a holley street dominator. I'm really more concerned about driveability than top end power, as the car spends 98% of its time on the street. Also, I can tune the carb as well, so I'm not expecting it to be perfect out of the box. Oh, and I'm currently in Maryland but there's no telling where the navy is going to send me so I'd prefer to have a choke.

What advice can y'all offer on the Proform, Quick Fuel, or even the demon carbs as well as some of the others in comparison to a holley?

I have a Proform 850 DP on my 496 engine. Just as good as a Holley in my opinion

The Holley Street Dominator is one of my favorite intakes. I had one on my 500 for a good while. I even modded it to accept a Dominator carb. Ran real well.

I don't know which of the carbs you listed would be best for you. Since you are more interested in their street manners than their all out performance, the best choice will be the one that is tuned the closest for your combo and therefore require the least tuning. The only way to find out is to try them.

While I like the Double-Pumpers a lot, the vacuum secondary carbs are usually more street friendly in that they are not nearly as rich in the low speeds.

Your ability to tune whichever carb you eventually select is probably more important than which carb you select. The biggest difference in between street oriented carbs of the same CFM is usually the low speed metering. Since you can deal with that, then the best carb is simply the one that is closest OOTB.

If it matters, these engines love CFM. I run a 1050 Dominator on my mainly street 500. It replaced a 950 Proform on this engine and gained a full MPH at the track. So I would certainly go with something in the 850 Range. I have had good experiences with the Holleys and the Proforms, but I have always struggled with the Demons.

The low deck street dominator wasn't as good as the 440 version.I would consider an rpm intake for more bottom end, throttle response and better idle characteristics of a dual plane. For a carb if you want a vacuum secondary one of the 750 holley hp carbs would work very well. They flow more than 750.

You didn't mention what kind of converter you are running.
A well tuned 750-850 double pumper would be fine as well.

I'm running a 3000 stall converter, and I would be running an RPM or something a little taller than the street dominator intake but with my flat hood I already have clearance issues.

Try a Holley 770 or 870 Street Avenger. It's built for the street. Or, look around on the 'bay you will find 850 vac secondary carbs that come stock on bigblock chevy crate motors.

BUT.....

Hey, wait a minute! Back in the '70s there was one of the hot rod mail order places selling brand new 800cfm Holley spreadbores for $59.95. I bought two. One went on my brother's '67GTO and I didn't have a use for the other one. A freind bought a '73Coupe DeVille and didn't like the performance. I sold him the other 800, bolted it on and the car came to life. It had a lot more snap thrououht the whole rpm range.
Engine displacement - 472
Carb number - 6213

If you are running a spreadbore intake it's a no-brainer.
