coal tar epoxy in wheelwells?

I was thinking of using coal tar epoxy in my cuda wheelwells for undercoating. i not worried bout factory correct. just wonder if anybody tried. ive got a gallon sitting on shelf.any pros or cons to this stuff?

Wow, I haven't heard of that stuff in 20+ years. We used to coat underground tanks with that stuff to keep them from rusting. Now everything is epoxy coated instead.

I'd say why not? If your not worried about being original, I bet it does a good job.

I applaud you for thinking outside the box. If you have a gallon, then you probably know the manufacturer and can find out what kind of primer it needs. Of course, surface prep is the key to any coating or lining job. For coal tar epoxy we usually specify a pretty rough white metal blast. Check with the paint manuf.
How would you apply it? A brush or roller may be better because then you don't breathe as much of it. Also skin protection is a must.

If you plan to put any other finish over top of it, you should investigate compatability between the finishes. (Or do a test piece)

With the newer epoxy coatings, I would use one of them. The coal tar epoxy is cheap enough I suppose. You can go on up to 16 mils thick. However you wont achieve anything but a flat finish. It has all the soil, salt and chemical resistance your look for granted, but I would like something with at least a satin or more sheen. Remember with most coal tar 2 component epoxies there is a 10 to 15 minute induction time after you mix the two together. Usual pot life is 4 hrs, so have your act together. The product will go directly over metal or can be used on top of an appropriate primer.

well so far so good.. i just applied the blue water marine two part coal tar epoxy. and seem to work great for what i needed. ill know more about it tomorrow lol.
