good quality/affordable steel crank for my 440? - 01/31/13 03:58 AM

I'm in the market for a steel crank for my 440 I'm putting together, its a 450-475hp aluminum headed street/strip toy. Trying to find a steel crank motor for a donor crank is damn near impossible around here lol. I was looking at ohio crank, they have a 4340 crank for under 600, any suggestions on one for this build? I'm trying to keep the cost down on the build but definitely dont have a problem paying for a quality piece to save me from destroying the motor a year down the road... thanks guys!

On occaision I see em on here for $100-125 (plus the ride). I wouldn't have the slightest hesitation about using one

Yes, for what you want just look for a stock forged crank in the classifieds.

You just have to find the right guy in your area. I have a few steel cranks stashed out in the shop and I'm sure other Mopar guys do too. They are hard to find in the wrecking yards, but Craigslist will usually find you one. Or check with an old school engine shop. They usually know who to call for parts. I have engine builders call me all the time for Mopar parts since they know that I usually have a few core motors sitting out back.

The 413 crank in my 451 was sourced on craigslist. I see them on ebay now & then also.

If you haven't started building/buying parts yet, a stroker crank is the same $$ as a new stock stroke crank. Same with new forged pistons. The only extra $$ would be a decent set of H-beam rods if you don't already have them. Gotta buy this stuff anyway so you might as well buy it big as buy it small.

A stroker kit is one stop shopping for your bottom end. 511 cubes for little or no more money than a 446. No replacement for displacement. Best money you will ever spend.

450-475 HP?? A cast crank can handle that. The only reason it would destroy itself in a year is if the machining was wrong or the assembly prep.

Once you price stuff, the new crank, forged pistons & etc., it's either go KB's w/cast crank and prep'd factory LY rods or the stroker big block kit as mentioned.

If you must have a forged crank, there's always some in the Moparts Classifieds.

So far i have these for parts:
performer rpm intake and fuel pump
4160 750cfm carb
440source stealth heads with 1.5 roller rockers and fabbed aluminum valve covers
xe274 cam and dual roller timing chain
probe +.030 pistons
scat h beam rods
melling oil pump and 440source windage tray
440source distributor and msd coil with accel wires
billet underdrive pulleys
440source sfi flexplate and fluid damper
headmann headers-full length hooked to 3" x-piped exhaust
Im not 100% on hp but im guessing between 450 and 475 and Id like to eventually up the power and it would be nice to know that the bottom end is sound enough for it. I would have liked to build a stroker but ive been aquiring these parts from a guy at work who is giving up on a gtx project he was building. the price is defintely right and theres no way i could build a stroker for what i have into the parts i have now. I guess i will start looking for a stock steel crank in the classifieds then. Thanks again guys!

All you need are pistons and a crank. You were all set to buy a crank so sell your Probes and get a set of pistons the correct CH and instant 511. The rest of your stuff will work depending on what your end use is going to be. Cam and carb could stand to be bigger but it will still make enough torque to turn the world.

dont waste a forged crank to swing around stock connecting rods,they would be the weak link-there are many 450 horse smallblocks with cast cranks running around.im in yelm wa and if you want ill take 100 plus your cast crank for my 413 industrial that needs polishing(slight surface rust)

if you get a crank from your local junkyard,the junkman has a job.
get it machined at the local shop and that guy has a job.get apart off graiglist and maybe that guy gets to pay his bills that month.you get to make friends with these guys and learn stuff from them.for want of a 475 horse motor id make sure not a dollar of my cash left my niehborhood much less went to china.

i hear all the time thats its cheaper to buy stuff than to recondition old stuff but personally i like putting my money right into my friends hands.my motor has a set of 906 heads that i have about 750 bones in and nobody understands why.this stuffs only cheeper to those of us who still are employed.
