This sucks... no oil flow to heads - 01/26/13 10:42 PM

Hey gang..
I'm helping a buddy fire up his '71 440 for the 1st time. As a preparation, we're priming the motor... Welllllllllllll,

We're not getting any oil to the heads via the pedastals to the rocker arm shafts. We have oil and pressure to the oil pressure sending unit and I can see it oozing along the back the lifer valley... It is my understanding there are plugs in the back of the block that block off the passages? If not installed, the oil flows withing the block, but dumps back down into the oil pan? Hence not going up to the heads? We took off the rocker arm assemble/shaft and can't see ANYTHING coming out of the 4 holes........

You have to rotate the crank while prelubing it so the passageways int he cam journal will line up with the passageways drilled in the block that feed the heads.

This alignment only occurs once per side for every two crank revolutions.

Oh, only one of the two "holes" gets oiled per head, the other hole is there so that the head can work on either side of the block.

You have to rotate the crank while using the drill to rotate the pump at the same time? mmmmmmmm ? Never heard of that?

That is the way to get oil to the rockers. "Try it,you'll like it" as the old commercial says.

Ah, I remember my first big block rebuild, enjoy it.

And ..... you'll only get oil to one side at a time.

Keep turning the crank to lube the other side.

Frank

edit!

Ahh .. Supercuda already said that.

I'm not getting oil to either of the four possible holes on the rocker arm pedestal.. I've called my friend back and will.........

Put the shafts back on first, or you'll be watching oil drip off of the ceiling for a bit.

Hahahaha... Yes, well, I put the bolts in..... But, I will go back and install the shafts.......

Hopefully it is the lack of rotating the crank that's lead to our misdiagnoses.. I would hate to pull the motor. I have a remote starter, so we'll crank as we spin the oil pump....

Cheers,

The rocker assembly only gets oiled from the #4 camshaft bearing to both sides.

This may help.

If you swapped heads side to side you may have a carbon build up on 1 or both heads. There are 2 oil feed holes. 1 is deadheaded and can get sludge/carbon buildup. I know from experience.......Good luck

By the illustration, I wouldn't have come to a conclusion to rotate the crank and I couldn't find anything in the service manual to state this fact of rotating the crank. The motor is complete fresh, no carbon build up here...

BUT,

Success........ I used my remote starter connected to the starter relay switch and cranked the motor will Hoss spun the pump priming rod... Voila !!

It worked... Oil oozing all over the rear pedastals for the rocker shafts... Soooooooo, all's good in the world. I'll button it up and press forward with the initial start up ( probably next weekend now ).

Thanks guys..

next time with the timing chain dot to dot (6 & 12 o'clock) the timing marks will be at TDC & #6 cyl is firing. Prime it at that point & the pass head will oil then turn the crank back 3/4 turn (till the rotor is under the #8 cap terminal) & the DR head is oiling at that point. That way you're doing the least amount of hand turning before fireup which'll wipe the goop off of the cam lobes

You don't have to rotate the crank, you just have to have the camshaft in the correct locations. I set the cam to oil the passenger side, then rotate the crankshaft 450 degrees and oil the driver side.

I have all of my cams grooved on the #4 journal now so the rockers oil full time, that helps cool the valve springs and lubricates the rockers and pushrods full time, I do put a .040 restrictor in the block oil passages at the same time to limit the amount of oil to the rockers so I don't flood the heads
