Slug on my K-frame

Slug on my K-frame - 01/04/13 02:32 PM

I have 69 Dart Swinger 340ci 4-speed built at Hamtramck,Mi. On the front of the K-frame is a(factory) Quarter size slug welded to it with a #no on it(06?) Why do some car I see have it and some don't,and what does it mean? I have also seen them on E & B body also. Thank for any Help with this Bob

Re: Slug on my K-frame - 01/04/13 02:46 PM

Although I've never seen any documentation that explains it I have noticed that they are only on 340 cars. Up until recently I could not see anything unique about them, however after checking out a bunch of K-members comparing 340 to 318 cars (the 318 cars didn't have the slugs) I think I found out what they were for. The 340 units had a reinforcement piece which looks like a half of a large washer welded to the rear of the LCA pivot hole, likely due to the theory that 340 cars might be getting a bit more abuse. The slug was likely added and used as a quick identifier for workers when installing a K-member into 340 car since the reinforcement piece is not very obvious.

First pic here is a 340 and a 318 K-member (both are from 1971 Dusters)

Scott , you are comparing 71 duster K frames , the OP has a 69 Dart so do you really think it's a fair comparison ?

Are you talking about the welded on "coin"? It is a part number that relates to the k-frame number on the build sheet. Seen coins welded on top of other coins to change the part number as well.....probably a vendor re-work in this instance - like adding a skid plate etc. to an existing non-skid K

All holds true from what I've seen so far regardless of the year. The 71's are all I had handy pics of.

FJ5, none of the A-body units I've seen had any numbers stamped into them, just a bare steel round slug welded a few inches away from the assembly date code on the drivers side front face of the K-member as shown in my pic above..

Be interesting to know if you have one on a 69 A body , I've never seen a coin on anything older than 70 ...

Re: Slug on my K-frame - 01/04/13 04:45 PM

I'll see if I can find some John, it's possible that they were only added after finding earlier failures with 68/69 340 cars so it may be that 68's and 69's (or early 69's?) never had them.

My 69 cuda 340 has a washer , not a slug, welded on mine. it also has the reinforcement around the LCA holes.

My 340 Duster has that slug also. So I went over and looked at my friends 69 340 Dart, it's there too. Must be a 340 thing.

Re: Slug on my K-frame - 01/08/13 11:53 PM

Could you guys who have posted pics of K-members with slugs/washers please post the spd of your cars? Also the stamped in date code on the K-member and production plants if possible?

Thanks!

Re: Slug on my K-frame - 01/09/13 12:40 AM

where would the date code be, and what is spd ?

Re: Slug on my K-frame - 01/09/13 01:49 AM

About 6 inches to the left of the slug/washer on the face of the K-member will be a number stamped into the face of the K-frame, that's the date code. The SPD is the cars Scheduled Production Date.

Re: Slug on my K-frame - 01/09/13 05:28 PM

I took a look under my '71 340 Duster today. Tried to find the #'s you referred too stamped in the "K" member. Looked real hard, but couldn't find them. I do have the washer, and the reinforcements welded around the LCA holes. My Duster was made in the LA plant.

Its there, I see an 0 just to the left of about where your camera flash hit it. They are often extremly difficult to read due to a poor stamp and thin font style. If you wipe off the paint with sime acetome you'll likely see it.

Re: Slug on my K-frame - 01/09/13 05:57 PM

My SPD is fairly late - 625 Hamtramck built....will try and get the date off the K

WOW Scott, your eyes are better than mine. I still don't see it! As for your suggestion about wiping the paint off, can't, going into the Sacramento Autorama next month. Just got this baby back together. Here's two more pics. But I still don't see it! Damn.......
