Thermo-Guard Battery Box - 12/20/12 05:44 AM

Does this look like the correct battery cover for a '77 A38 Monaco (B) with a 440?

Thanks

Yes. They were universal. One size fits all.
Two caveats:
1. They require their own special hold down bracket.
2. The battery has to duplicate the design of the OEM battery in size, terminals, caps, etc to fit properly, not that most aftermarket batteries won't fit. Just not properly.

For your reference, here's the original from my '77 Cordoba.

The ones on my M body police cars are very similar to that one, but they have a bit of a "snorkel" at the front of the box to guide air flow from the front of the car around the battery. The "snorkel" like thingy pushes up against the rad support. Sorry, at work now and don't have a pic on this computer, but lmk if you'd like one.

I wouldn't mind seeing it just for my own reference.
Thanks.

Thanks guys. Do any of you have a picture of the hold down for the older style box and an idea of an aftermarket battery that does fit it without cutting/modifying?

Eric's picture is the police one that came with my cars. Thanks Eric. I have huge battery from Walmart in all mine and the thermoguard fits over them. You can see all the extra room in Eric's pic. I don't think you will have any trouble fitting a battery. If it fits in the battery tray, the guard will fit over it. The hold downs that I used on mine is also from Walmart. The only one they had, hanging next to the batteries. It is plenty long.

Here's my original hold down.

The end on the right in the photo above faces forward in the car, and bolts through a hole in the core support. The hook on the other end hooks through a hole in the tray. The "arch" at the top protrudes slightly through a slot in the top of the guard.

The 1978 shop manual shows the hold-down for a B body (whatever that is in 1978) has the windshield washer reservoir built into it!

Correct. Starting in 1978, for the B bodies anyway, the washer bottle was integrated into the Thermogard. These can be used on the earlier cars, but you have to move the pump wiring harness from the right fender to the left. I have one of those that I'll be running on my '77.
