i run a solid in my 65 coronet 440 6-pak. engine runs smoother and is easier to tune. more flexiable than a hydraulic.

I love them on the street!

I've run the MP .528 in a 440 and, IMO, there is no better street/strip cam!

Use some Crane iron rockers and you'll have a nice, reliable piece that makes awesome power.

Solid lifters, forged crank, 4 1/8" stroke - Gotta love the my old Slant Six!

They work fine. Early slant sixes, 273s & early street hemis all came from the factory with them. I ran an Isky solid in my old '66 street hemi and set valves twice a year. I could have easily gotten by with just once a year, but I was a lot younger then and didn't mind working on the cars as much then.

I built a cast crank 440 for my brother that has a small solid and big valve ported 452's.... headers and torker intake with edelbrock 750 = throttle response out the wazoo....... TBF

I run one in my 66 charger. My fiance has pulled the valve covers to check the lash once in the 2 years we've been driving it. Like anything else, run good oil and don't run crazy spring pressures, and always break in the cam on the outer spring if using a flat tappet. Steve

For the last 24 years.Once you go solid you'll never go back.Solid lifters are your friends.

I'm running a MM grind solid. 243@.050 and .55 lift in a 496 "B". I love it. Valve adjustment holds up well. Valvetrain upgrades (3/8 pushrods, comp pro magnum rockers) probably help keep it happy. There is a little more mechanical noise which I don't mind a bit.

Ran a 243 @ .050/ .548 Ultradyne NF solid in my old 9:1 street/strip 440. I felt like I was wasting my time every time I checked the lash since it never needed adjusted. I'm going to run the 271 @ .050/ .620 NF in my 493 Indy SR street/strip Barracuda when I finally get it together one of these years.

Lashing the valves is fun, too.

Worked real good on the street. It was an Ultradyne .590/.613 made for 440s in heavy cars.

Yes, mine was one of the heavy ones. 65 Plymouth
Sport Fury at 4000 lbs. Drove it darn near everyday for 4 years.

Now, the Cuda is a different story. Some cams are
just a plain b!tch on the street

Sounds great, my minds made up then.... I like the looks of the Hughes profiles. The 4248 looks to be a good street strip piece. Do you guys think 10* locks & retainers are a must with solid lifter valvetrain that will see 6400 rpm?

I run the MP .557 cam in my mild 440 in my 63 and I love it. I use Isky ductile iron rockers and I adjust my valves once a year. And most of the time they dont even need adjusting. I love running the solid cam in my street/strip car. Ron

Big MP solid in my 528, I'll never go back to a hydralic. Check the lash once every spring, hasn't changed since I broke it in. Dave

Re: Who runs a solid cam on the street? - 11/20/08 12:12 PM

We have a custom grind solid in the 383 in our RR. DRAM speced it when he built the motor so I don't know the specs. However, it has been great.

All our other cars have solid lifters (flat tappets on the MG, rollers on the Land Rovers) so I am used to setting the lash, although it is more like checking it as on any of the cars it rarely changes.

As far as the noise, personally I hate hydraulic lifters as they always seem to start ticking. When I told DRAM I wanted to use a solid cam in the 383 because of both the ticking and also performance, he asked me "You would rather listen to 16 lifters that are supposed to make noise rather than one that is not supposed to make noise?" "Exactly" was my response.

I have an MP528 in my 470" and LOVE IT! CLACKITY colapsed hydraulics drove me CRAZY. I dig the "mean sewing machine" sound now!
