440 with HP manifolds, Cast valve cover options?

440 with HP manifolds, Cast valve cover options? - 11/19/12 08:49 PM

I have the 440 in the Superbird almost buttoned up and am looking for options on the valve covers. I would like to run a set of cast aluminum covers but am now gun shy about what will fit. I have the Year One repop HP (68-69 style) exhaust manifolds and discovered that the passenger side manifold and my new MP cast aluminum valve cover want to occupy the same space. I have now learned that this was common for these valve covers. So, are there any that do fit? I seem to remember a buddy had a set of Mickey Thompson valve covers on his big block back in the 80's that fit, but I cant remember if he had manifolds or headers
Anyone know what would work?
Thanks
Scott

Depending how much it is hitting, you could run a thicker exhaust manifold gasket. I like Remflex gaskets.

The M/T, Holley, Wieand, and Cal Customs that I owned in my life all worked with factory exhaust manifolds.

I have not yet tried the Mopar brand ones. I own a set.

When I swapped from headers to '68 manifolds, I also had to swap my fabricated aluminum rocker covers to stamped steel.

My MP cast covers hit with the stock (non HP) manifold also. We ground enough off the cover to clear. You couldn't see it after it was done, but you may not want to hack new covers....

Thicker gaskets as mentioned may work. Remflex makes awesome gaskets.

Use the factory motor home exhaust gaskets.

This is what I've done in the past w/ a pair of MP aluminum covers. Just grind a little off the valve cover and it will clear.

Double or triple the gaskets(space it out) on the manifolds

Looks like yer opening up a can of worms to me. I would go to the old early 70 chrome valve covers. Your going to have 2 issues with those. Bolts hard to tighten, and extreme heat on the side, cooking the gasket. Or the stock ones back on. You ever noticed every stock valve cover with HP exhaust manifolds have cooked the paint right off of them?

Thanks for all the responses, I suppose I should have clarified, the side of valve cover is hitting the manifold, in addition to the valve cover flange being tight. Anyone have an idea of what kind of clearance is "acceptable" between the valve cover and manifold? As somone already said, that area of paint is always burnt off anyway...

FePro used to have exhaust manifold gaskets with a heat shield. Don't know if they still make them though.

use original valve covers!!! To me, they would look more at home since you are gonna use cast manifolds!!!

I like stock looking engines that run GOOD AND HARD.

I run HP manifolds on my 440 with MP cast valve covers. I had a local machine shop grind off the nub on the inside of the manifold. I also run studs instead of bolts. The Mr. Gasket valve cover stud kit has nuts with the washers attached. It will give just enough room to get them on.

Good Luck
